Need Mechanical Advice (Possibly Transmission-related)

Hey All,

A good friend of mine owns a '96 Bronco and continues to have issues with what seems to be the transmission. I am in no way a mechanic but thought I would post the email he sent me to see if any of you had a clue what it specifically may be (and also a fair price to fix).

Here goes:

"The truck is a 96 Ford Bronco, 5.8L 4WD. The problem is that the shifter is really sloppy and its hard to get the car into the required gear. Sometimes when i put it in park, it doesn't quite make it....but the car shuts off and then won't turn back on.....until i get it back into park."

Nope, don't even know what it intels? I would get a manual and try it out.

I had very similar symptoms in my '96 a few years ago. (difficult to get the shifter lever into the desired position, sometimes overshoot the desired spot, etc.) It was just a loose bracket where the linkage connects to the steering column.

Follow the steering column down near the pedals and you will find a bracket bolted to the column with the shift linkage connected to it. The bracket is held to the column with two torx head bolts. (can't remember the size) It's not a very comfortable spot to work (lying on your back on the drivers floor board, looking up under the dash), but it is an easy five minute fix to tighten the bolts.

If that is the problem, it will cost nothing to fix. (unless you have to buy a torx bit /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> )

what tranny is it if a C-6 can adjust at the tranny not sure for the rest but think same for them as well
