gas tank overfills at the pump

I tried posting this in the 66-77 bronco section w/ no luck, so I figured I would give it a shot here! I only running my aux. fuel tank right now and for some reason when I fill up at the pump, the nozzle doesn't click to stop fuel flow. So what happens is I'm left w/ about 2 gal. of gas on the ground and a ticked off gas station attendant stuck w/ cleanup duty! What, would cause this to happen? Oh, the gas spills out of what I would say is the gas tank breather.

Where is the "breather" located? Is it belows the level of the fill tube?

The breather is located directly on top of the fuel tank and is located lower than the filler neck. Are you thinking that if the breather tube may need to extend to a higher point than the filler neck, then the gas pump should detect that the tank is full and "click" instead of a fuel spill issue?

Exactly, if it is below the filler neck, I'd expect it to spill. New style vents are located inside the fill tube with a separate hole where you insert the pump nozzle. Older style ones usually came out to a vent next to the filler tube but still inside the fuel door.
