That's a pic of one from a site, mine doesn't have the little notches downward, but it's gotta have the 4 notches upward. All it has to do is slide into 4 notches in the nut on the axle, my tool looks like they're + from each other.

Anyway, the tool is 1/2 drive, 3 and 3/8 tall, 2 and 5/16 wide, and the notches are 1/4 wide and 1/4 high.

I did my wheel bearings about 2 weeks ago, took about 4 hours total doing it myself, since I had no previous experience. That, and I completely forgot where all the snaprings and all were in my hub... :wacko:

Hope that helps. Good luck if you plan on making one.

The Dana 44 Spindle Nut tool is available from several locations, you can contace some of them for shipping information.

http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-29625_...et__dana_44.htm

This is a great source of parts as well and I'm pretty sure they ship internationally.

When reinstalling the spindle nuts, tighten the first one to 25 ft. lb. (not sure how that converts to Kg) while wiggling the wheel to seat the new bearings, back it off far enough for the *** in nut to seat in the locking washer (small hole). Then tighten the outer nut to 125 ft. lb.

Good luck,

:)>-

yo;

some DIY Info for you; & are they Maunual or auto locking hubs?

Bronco FAQ (full version)

Source: by Matt K at off-road.com via web.archive.org

"11.3 How come the hubs on my 87-88 Bronco are different than other Broncos?

This was another of Ford's better ideas. For '87 and '88 Ford used a one-piece locking hub assembly. This hub simply sits between the wheel and brake rotor and is held in place by the wheel studs. This type of hub is very easy to remove (simply remove the wheel), but it is different from all other Broncos and therefore parts and replacement hubs are expensive and hard to find.

To convert your 87-88 Bronco to the "standard" hubs you'll need to swap all the parts from the spindle out from a Bronco or F-150. It may even be possible to take these parts from any vehicle with a Dana 44 front axle and the same wheel bolt pattern as the Bronco (5 on 5.5"). If you are considering this swap it would be a good time to consider the 8 lug axle swap you've always wanted (see section 10.2).
