Just out of curiosity

What years did Ford put the various automatic transmissions in and what were their main differences?

C4

C6

AOD

AODE

E4OD

did I miss anything?

E4OD

I am pretty sure that they started using the E4OD in the '90 broncos. Mine has one.

It is an electronically controlled four speed (with overdrive) and it was used through 1996 in Broncos.

I don't know if they used it longer in F150s

There were a number of upgrades to it over the years, and I think they were done by 1995.

There is a push button on the dash to disengage overdrive.

the 3 speed c6 and 4speed aod was used on the 80-86 models.

87-91 still had the c6 and aod but now also had the E40d.

aod-e and e40d were on the 92+ models

I dont know that the c4 was ever an option in a truck. I think they used that in the cars(i know some Lincolns had c4s behind the 351s while the 460s had c6s behind them)

c6 didnt have over drive. All shift was done through hydraulics.

E40d was its replacement and offered a 4th speed and electronic shifting.

AOD was the first 4 speed auto with OD that ford used i think. It was still all hydraulics and was a bit weaker than the c6.

AODE is pcm controlled, while the AOD only had the cable connecting it to the engine. While the aode was based off aod i dont think internals are swappable but i am not an Auto guy

The 73'-77' Broncos used the C4 & the Bronco II's used C5's (just a C4 with a lockup TC). It's also in my 78' shop manuals with the F100 & F150 being listed as applications. I know F-trucks used it up till 82 or 83 but I don't think any of the big Broncos ever had one.
