one last tire question

What is the largest tire (on a 15" wheel) that I can mount on my outside spare tire carrier without damaging my tailgate or carrier? I currently have the original spare and want to mount a 32 incher. Thanks in advance.

Thats what I figured.

I do see one draw back: Not being able to really see past the tire. But then again, can you really see past the tire with a stock sized tire on the back?

I've had a 33 inch tire on my 95 for years with no issues. However what you do with your rig & how you drive it are likely bigger issues to consider. Flogging it off road like I do with my 92 a 29 inch P235/75R15 would fall off before long.

My uncles bronco (94) has had a 315/75/16 wheel and tire on his for years with no problem.

A friend of mine has a 35 incher on his, he has had no problems, another friend has a 36 and his is getting floppy. From what I have seen, 35 is pushing the limit, 33 and lower you are safe.

i'm bringing this thread back from the dead, but will a 15x10 rim with a 33x12.50 tire fit on the carrier? i hope so, i just ordered it today...... [-o<

It may fit, but just barely. The biggest problem I've seen with a 33" or larger tire is the extra weight ripping out the bolts in the quarter panel, or even worse, buckling the sheetmetal ahead of the bumper. When I went to 35" tires, I pulled the rear carrier completely off, and botled the spare 35" rim & tire to the floor throught the rear seat anchor. Prevented theft, too.

No problemo, GS!!! My 84 had a 32x11.50 spare on it for years without any problems, except for wearing out the carrier and locking mechanism. But I've seen a few Broncos with 33" tires on the carrier where it got swung out real hard or unhooked while offroad, and it will buckle the rear quarter. If you have a beater trail rig, no big deal.

oh, i'll be extremely careful opening and shutting it. i just hope the latch holds up.

Yea that wouldnt be nice to be rolling down the road and the latch were to fail. Not nice at all
