a co-worker just called me in a panic apparently he snapped both axles on his 94 full size just before he returned to pavement and wants to know if he can remove the axles to get home and to the garage in the morning I am not sure but think he could just plan on flushing the diff and of course put back in 2x4

his money is tight can fix it but not with the tow fees from where he is

I don't see why not. The spindles are bolted to the knuckles, the axle does not hold any of the parts together. Drawback will be that both the hubs and the diff will have openings to collect whatever the road throws up in there.

Vey good question. Why not dissengage the hubs and transfer, move the truck a little ways while someone watches to see if any parts still move. Could probable save a lot of time and effort on the trail and do the work at home on a nice flat driveway.

Autos will probably not disengage if the axles are broken.

ok they are manual and the damn hub wont dissengage the axxle on the right side its just slapping the sh@t out of everything in the area

That is correct, the broken parts would spin and cause more damage. If he can get them un locked he should be fine, just watch for anything bad happening like roadkill said, if its kosher then drive for a bit with all ears looking for bad sounds.

Unlock the hub, spin the axle backwards by hand until it disengages
