OKay guys I need you brains all mashed together. I know it might be a sin but I need you help with something other than a bronco. This should be pretty easy for the supreme commanders out there. My bro in law just bought 1990 Jeep CHerokee 4.0 L automaticw/ 4wd nice looking little guy but they are having serious problems with it and we have to get it fixed before friday(he has to return to duty he just got home from Iraq for the holidays). The truck started and ran fine until my inlaws put ina new fuel pump inside the tank. They say they can hear it running but now the thing wont start. I need all of your ideas so we can get this thing together for him. I am going over after work to work on it and will check back for any of your brilliant ideas, thanks guys and thanks on behalf of my bro in law US Army

sounds stupid but.... make sure the fuel lines are hooked up properly- that they aren't sucking air- see if there is a fuel bleed- like the valve stem on a tire, that would be under the hood- maybe there's air in the lines- also is there gas in the tank( i've seen that before). does the new pump use the stock pig tail or did they have to splice the wires together? good luck

Not really alot of info included there. What sort of diagnostics have been tryed so far? Checked for fuel at the engine? At the fuel filter? Is there spark? Why was the pump changed? Did the other one go? you said it ran until the new one was put in, well if it ran why did it get removed? No that those are out of the way, are you sure the old one was toast? do you have access to it. Try and hook it up to power and see if it runs. Are you doing this over the phone talking to them or are you at the vehicle, are you sure the new pump is actually running. Fuel pump enertia switch tripped? fuel filter plugged? See what I mean, and I could go on.

Hey my 1st bronco sat for just over a week because I assumed the pump was gone. I put gas in it and woohoo the pump started working like magic

You should try being an army mechanic, ALL your parts come from the lowest bidder. I can't count how many non-functional "new" parts I installed before I turned in my toolbox and changed MOS. (MOS is army-ese for job title)

Go over the basics:

1.Fuel is getting to the engine.

2.The firing order is correct.

3.It gets spark.

4. It has oil

5. All plugs are plugged in.

6. Its timed properly.

Or you can just remove the new fuel pump and take it back and get another one, which ever.

Thats funny,I just got a call the other day from my girlfriend's niece, her 90 cherokee won't start and she wants me to take a look at it.It has a fuel issue (assuming the fuel pump).I put a motor in that thing four years ago @ 122,000 miles and it seems she's always putting money in it.

a new motor at 122,000 that is way too early, unless you just ore it up

I don't remember what the problem was with the motor(could of been seized)never tried it.They bought a new motor and wanted me to put it in.122,000 seemed low for the motor to be shot but Iv'e seen them crap out as little as 23,000m (3.8l Buick v-6) May have lost oil pressure or got severely overheated.

On the jeep issue, My wife had a limited edition cherokee an 89. We soon discovered what JEEP stands for, Just Exchange Every Part. I got so sick of working on it I sold it for 300 bucks.
