the 300 has got to be the easiest engine to change a head gasket, so I would go that route if I were you.

Put a new head gasket in. Dont worry about the bottom end, that thing should run for a long time yet. As long as she wasnt burning oil its well worth it

yah know as afr as i am consinernd you can probably go ahead and do the bearing ne ways i mean when you get down to the gasket you have prety much got everything outta the way to do the main and crank bearingss and get it honed if the walls look bad ... right? when i had one blow out on my 302, thats what i did and its good for yah to get to know the engine that way 2 because i had to take mine apart so much i could change timing chain gaskets and head gaskets in a little over an hour on a mustang 302 after i did it for the 3,000 time ....lol ( if you ever owned a mustang you know what i am talkin about)... so i wold just change the gasket and then if you got the time and money do the bearings goodluck

Have a good machine shop check your head for cracks and warpage and you might as well replace the valve seals while your at it.As far as your bottom end,if your 4.9 didnt burn excesive oil and your pressure was still good, that engine could run 4ever.I have seen these engines get well over 500k miles. The 4.9's are probably the best engineered engine ever as far as reliability and torque.
