I am in the slow process of getting another Bronco, preferably a 90 - 91 with tan interior. I am considering taking on somewhat of a "project" and would love to paint it olive drab. Has anyone ever done this on anything, not necesarily on a Bronco? Do they make OD in only primer or does it come it "regular" automotive paint? It the flat OD hard to maintain? What about rust?

Like I said, this is not for a little while but so far all I have able to find online is primer, flat OD and camo kits.

Thanks guys.

Any automotive paint or primer, such as DuPont or PPG can be blended or tinted to any color you're heart desires. I'd love to see what House of Kolor would come up with for OD.

Yeah I love OD. Do you think it would take to much away from the truck if I found a metal flake OD? I know that paint with a clear coat is way easier to keep clean but I don't have any experience with flat paint. I think an Eddie Bauer edition would be cool for this as I would have tan interior and the tan stripe on the body could be camo. A tan cap, OD body and camo trim. That would be frickin' sweet. But do Eddie Bauers ever have floor shift 4x4? That is a requirement as well.

Does OD come in regular paint or just spray? I guess you could put a clear coat over spray. And let me know what your friend has to say.... I know next to nothing about paint so I am open to all suggestions!

Thanks!

How does a light OD with metalic flakes sound? If you watch TrucksTV! on Powerblock, you may have seen this truck. When Stacey David was still hosting the show, he worked on a project called SGT Rock. It was a really cool looking OD color. The website in the link has photos and all the details of the truck, even the formula for a paint shop to mix the paint for you. I have no earthly idea how much something like that would cost, but all this talk about OD paint has me thinking...

If I decide to paint my truck, I'll just have to tell my wife it's all your fault for putting the idea in my head. :-"

That is AWESOME! I want that color. I want it now! But now I'm thinking a black cap may look better than tan, especially with that color.....I don't know. Man I can't wait to do this! But I have to wait. *grrrr* Oh well. At least I am getting some kick ass ideas!

Thanks guys!

O.K. my friend from Cali. says if you put a clear on use a clear that matches you're paint, This makes perfect sense now!!!!!!!LOL Example flat clear for flat paint............................so on so on. His sugestion was to use a "PEARL" instead of metal flake. We dont have the lifespan for me to type his explanation. Not that I even understand what half of it meant. He also advised that done propperly a basecoat OD or anyother color would hold up on its own without the need for a clear. He suggested the folowing, First a "self-etching" primer followed by a good wet sanding & repeat, "blocking" if for high quality, Then another coat of primer. Then apply color coats until satisfied with coverage ( allowing for drying time between each coat ) Then apply clear to desired finish.

Thanks to Eddie in Cali.

I agree that a black top would look better than tan over a light colored truck. My soft top is black and I like it's appearance a lot more than the tan top that came with the truck. I have considered trying to paint it, but am afraid off messing it up since its made of fiberglass. I'm sure a bodyshop could handle the job, but I am, after all, a cheapskate! (have to be to afford gas for the beast)

Here are two photos to show what I mean about the black top:

Thanks Mike for getting me that info. That helps alot. Roadkill, do you think a more "green" olive drab would look okay with a tan cap? I can probably find an Eddie Bauer bronco around here easier than one with a black cap.... But I have all the time in the word to find the "perfect" one...

And you're right, your Bronco looks much better with the black soft top. I like it! And I am with you on not wanting to paint fiberglass.

If by more green, you mean much darker, I think it would look good. I like the Broncos that have a lot of contrast between top and bottom. Even though I own one of the few Broncos that came with a matching color top, the only mono-color trucks I really like were the black over black "Nite" models. The others just look too blah to me (including my own).

I had a white on white with tan interior once. Yeah by more green I mean a little darker, more of an olive green color kinda not so much khaki. And the contrast is cool except I don't like the Eddie Bauer with the tan stripe on the bottom. I think that is what I want, an olive exterior, tan interior and a tan cap. Sounds good to me. I haven't decided on flat or not yet.

i was driving through town the other day and noticed an earlier model bronco that looked BAD-ASS- it had a lift (looked like a 6-inch), with a light bar on top, and one of the cleanest lloking camo paint jobs I've seen in a while. A lot of olive drab in it. If i had the cash- id do it to my '96.lol I'm gonna drive by the house again and take a pic of it to post for you, Trailmule- i think its a great choice and wish you the best of luck with it!
