just plain 4x4 should engage up to 45 if youre trying low range its not gonna do it unless youre in neutral and basically not moving.

make sure your hubs are locked in if you have manual hubs. sometimes people install manual hubs in place of auto ones because their cheeper and more reliable :)>-

Take the auto hub cover off & check inside visually for crude, etc. Only non-damage/contamination thing I can think of now is if you had it in 4x4 before you stopped; then backed-up, say over 10 feet; the auto hubs would then disengage and take a little time to engage again after you pressed the 4z4 button and get up to speed.

Owner's Guide (Manual) does not specify a min. engagement speed; following is from my 96 Guide.."

"To shift from Two-Wheel Drive to 4x4:

To shift into 4x4, push the 4x4 button located on the instrument panel. This shift can be done at a stop or at speeds up to 55 miles per hour (88 km/h). When the vehicle is driven, the automatic locking hubs will engage. If the vehicle is stopped while in 4x4 and the vehicle direction is reversed from the previous direction,

the automatic locking hubs will momentarily

disengage and reengage. The automatic locking hubs may click as they automatically engage in the new direction..."

Or, there could be some interal hub damage (esp. the clips which broke when we had the auto hubs); or it needs a light cleaning and light coat of Ford hub grease..

light" is the key word here.

Just to get some info while the on the subject. For an '81 with manual hubs, if they're locked, what's the highest speed one could shift from 2H to 4H?
