A while back, there was a thread from someone who had modified their aluminum intake manifold and cooling flow route to keep the 351w cool. Does anyone have good info. on exactly how to do that mod?

I've pretty much done everything I can in terms of a cooling system (other than adding a second remote radiator); and, it still get's too hot with the a/c on. This has been bugging me for years. The thing gets to 205-208 cruising on the highway in summer, with the air on. If you exit the freeway and find a stoplight, hello 220+.

Setup:

windsor

aluminum, dual plane Edelbrock intake

Speed demon 650

rv cam

stock heads

stock exhaust manifolds

a/c

Howe aluminum racing radiator (75% water - 25% water wetter)

7-blade puller fan (with shroud)

Dual 650 cfm auxiliary pusher fans

I was considering an engine swap when I read his post. Anyone know of this mod and how to do it (blow by blow including parts needed)??

Just out of curiosity, what is the CFM rating of the fans on your system? I run all day at a rock solid 195 and even on the hottest days with surface temperatures at 130 plus the fan only has to come on when I'm running below 35 and it still does not exceed 195.

The puller is belt driven, so who knows. It's a 7-blade fan designed to cool rv's. It's also inside a really tight shoud. The pushers are 650 each. You have to remember that I have a/c. It will stay around 200 or less without a/c. With the a/c on, it slowly builds heat until it's 208 or so, even cruising down the highway. I think older, carbureted windsors just **** big time. They were adequate back in 1974, but a joke and useless today. More a furnace than an engine.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I do not use A/C so that makes a difference in the results. I just saw the other pictures you posted that shows you have 3 fans two pushers and one stock puller. Have you ever run without the pushers installed? Just a thought that they may actually interfere with the flow of air through the radiator with a puller behind it, just a thought. Another thought is that pusher fans swirl the air where without them the air flow is strait through the radiator.

Any way, Good luck,

I know its crazy, but just a thought, what if you went to a let aggressive cam. I would imagine an rv cam would be a little aggressive.

I tend to agree, you maybe blocking to much air flow over the front of your radiator. Remove the pushers. You also need to consider getting some of the heat out of your engine compartment. Headers could help, including duals with a crossover. Is the rear of you hood opened up ? Is your puller mounted correctly in your shroud ? Fan placement inside the shroud is critical to the performance of your cooling system.

I had a hot windsor in my 94 so I went with a 160 t-stat. Took my "over heating" problem away with a vengance. Just a thought from a "new" Bronc.
