Are 35 inch tires too big for 78 bronco with stock axle? This viehicle will not see a lof of off road use at first, but there is definatly some mud in its future.
i have 35/12.5 with 4:10 gears. no problems with that combo.... exept the 35 are too small. i want to run 38/13.5 or 39.5/13.5 and keep my 35 for the off season.
a couple buddies of mine run early bronco axles and 44 boggers in the mud races down here in florida and never break.......go figure, 19 and 28 spline and 44's and i cant keep my 30 and 35 spline axles together for one pass down the strip at 3/4 throttle, with only 40 boggers! lol i guess just always be ready to replace/rebuild
I had no problems with that combo, it was only stepping up to 38's and a 429 when things really started to break, axles and carriers didn't like that added torque and traction /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
I run 38's locked F&R with minimal problems. I break hubs and D44 shafts here and there but its always under extream of road conditions. I found the Spicer 5-750X u-joints hold up the best in stock axles. Before the locker up front I never broke axle shafts. Open Diff's will save axle shafts, if you want lockers expect breakage.
I have a 78 and have been running 35's for about the last 30,000 miles. I HAD a stock limited slip with 4.11's. I broke the diff. at 102,000 miles, mild wheeling. I just installed a new Detroit Locker and new gears. What a difference the locker makes! I'll never run open or limited again in the rear.
