I have a 78 Bronco with a 351cu engine. It has either a "Dana 20" or what is known as a "New Process 205" Transfer Case. The Haynes manual specifies SAE 140W gear oil (Ford no. ESO-M2C83-C) and i can't find this weight in any local parts stores. All I find is multi-viscosity gear oil like 85W-140 or 95W-140. Am I missing something? Can I use one of this multi-viscosity gear oils in my transfer case.

As a general rule of thumb...

Cast iron transfer cases use gear ***** aluminum and magnesium cases use ATF or synthetic. This does not apply to the Early Bronco, recommended fluid for the Dana 20 is SAE 50.

I use synthetic 50% mobil synthetic 50% lucas and never worry about it again.

If it good enough for racing applications it good enough for me.

I dunno. I don't really trust lucas. I've seen tests where that stuff foams like crazy at speed. Since foam is full of air it just doesn't coat like straight **** would.

Next time you're in the parts store where they have the little demo gears and cranks for lucas, spin the lucas side for a few minutes. It'll start to foam every time.

78'-79' Bronco's came with either the NP203 or NP 205. The NP 205 uses 85W-140 gear oil. I run a combination of Lucas Oil and 85W-140 as per the instructions on the back of the Lucas oil bottle. I have found that my transfer case runs quieter, cooler and it is easier to shift. I have seen the reports on Lucas oil foaming, and think the results are biased. I say this because if you look real close, it looks like this guy is some sort of salesmen for another oil additive (you can see the product in the background). I also run Lucas in my engine and have been very happy with the results (better gas milage, cooler engine temps, etc.). Of course, you'll have to form your own opinion.

I have a '78 w/400, C-6, NP205. When the temps. are cold (winter) I run a lighter gear ***** (summer) I run the heavier ****. Makes for easier shifting and better lubrication when the **** gets thicker in lower temps. Have over 100k miles on it and have never had to change anything but the front & rear seals and of course, the oil. You can use synthetics or regular, multi visc or straight....just change it and keep it clean and your case will be happy! If you froad alot and get into deep mud/water, change it more frequently! Cases don't like it when they get water IN them.

You change your transfer case oil twice a year? Do you change you diff fluid and trans fluid that often also?

What kinds of tests? I use Lucas brand all the time and I never had that problem.
