can anybody tell me if the 79 bronco ever came from the factory with a nine inch? Ihere so many people talk down about the 8.8,isnt the only difference ring size. The desighn looks the same to me.I would have to say that the 8.8 is as strong as the 9".What do you guys think

drag racer's like the 9" because the gears come out the front all together, can change ratio's in a short time if you have other pigs laying around.

ain't nothing wrong with either rear end just gotta ask yourself what your gonna be doing to it?none of them last if you treat them wrong.

personally i'd ditch the 9" and the 8.8,buy a full floater and be done with it.

all though a 9" does have bolt in axles so if you bust it you are not gonna kiss the road.the 8.8 is c-clip you break an axle in it you'll buy a 9"

You can build a 9" to be as stong as you want.It just come's down to how much you want to spend.

I've had an '83 and now have a '90, '93 and '94. I don't know what came with a '79 but I can tell you a Ford 9" is much easier to rebuild and remove and replace. The 8.8" has to be rebult and "set up" in the differential case. The 9 " can be removed as a "pumpkin" and set up and rebuilt outside of the differential case.

You can have other pumpkins set up in different gear ratios, so you can change gear ratios quickly.

Availability and selection of parts seems to be better for the 9".

I have no idea which is stronger.

Maybe "the grass is always greener", but after rebulding two 8.8" differentials, I'd like a 9".

The 9 inch in stock for is stronger than any stock 8.8. I have seen more replacing 8.8 axles than I have 9 inch axles. If it's cheaper to build then it isn't likely it's a strong meaning frd went to an 8.8 axle design to save money not offer a better axle.

There is one major weak point in an 8.8 and that is the pinion gear does not have bearing supporting it like the 9 inch pinion gear does. Less support means it will move more. Add that with what I think is a weaker case and you have a weak point in the 8.8 axle, the pinion area. What goes first any most any 8.8? The pinion bearings.

One can argue all day long that one axle can built to be as strong as the other. I am going by factory stock axles. I would still say that if building the axle to be stronger you would still be better off dollar for dollar with the 9 inch.

the 9" not only has the supported pinion, but most that came in the 4x4's have 4 spider gears in the case, these are the strong ones , I have been told they are as strong as a dana 60, except you dont get the strength of the full floater axle's

I forgot about the 4 pinion thing. I have also read that the 9 inch is as strong as a 60 except for the axle shafts. There is a write up comparing the 9 inch and the dana 60 axles. Now I just need to recall what forum I saw it on.
