putting 5.0 from 1998 econoline to 1990 ford bronco

i put a 5.0 out a 1998 ford econoline into my 1990 bronco but the ecm conecter from the harness on the moto does not match up with the on on my bronco do i need to buy a adapter or use the old harness from the original 1990 engine and if i do will that harness connect to the 1998 5.0 engine.. I NEED HELP PLEASE

the 1998 Econoline ECM has 104 pins and your Bronco has 60 pins

Is it the 5.4?

I have not seen this done yet and I just know it is a big undertaking.

Use your Bronco's ECM & harness and then you will need to figure out which sensors & components to leave on the Bronco such as the MAP Sensor which is not used on the Econoline) and which to swap from Bronco engine or bay & how to wire, such as the Ignition Coil, Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) etc.

and what Sensors/components to swap from your Bronco into or onto the Engine (such as the coil, Intake Air Temp (IAT); (Air Charge Temperature [ACT] prior to 1992); Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP); used only in Speed Density Systems such as your 90 Bronco; etc.

I'd keep the Bronco's coil, and see if TPS wiring can be used as well as other sensors and components

BUT, I do not know if the Econoline IAC has same Resistance values as the Broncos IAC (7-12 ohms across pins) you can pull the Econo's IAC and see if it is same across the two pins

If it is a 96 or 98 then you'll need to figure out the sensor/component & wiring changes.

It is not a good thing, a huge job for someone without help or experience in electrical wiring and reading wiring diagrams

all need to be researched to determine if sensor values are = to your Bronco's sensors; you can pull each from Econoline engine and measure w/meter or research for values.

Hey 90,

What M5 is telling you is that the 98 engine has sensors and reactive parts that the computer on your 90 does not have the ability to read and control.

The process for eliminating/and or changing those components and the related wiring can be a complicated process for an experianced tech.

Something similar was tried by another member here. The work was extensive and time consuming. The results were never satisfactory, as I recall.

The unfortunate action may be to pull the 98 out and get a 90 from a Bronc or truck.

yes i can put up pics of engine and truck to give you more or less of an idea ... just give me till tomarow and ill post them up.... and guys i do not have the money for a new engine i actually should not be spending money or time on this truck i did a mistake from the begining buying it but im not a quiter i will not stop untill i drive this ****** atleast once then i will sell it! everything on the tuck is greaT BUT this harness deal .i really appresheate the help by the way and excuse my writing alot of words are miss spelled

Yes it is. I suggested that he use his Bronco's ECM (PCM, EEC) & harness and figure out what Sensors/components to swap from his Bronco into or onto the Engine (such as the coil, Intake Air Temp (IAT); (Air Charge Temperature [ACT] prior to 1992); Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP); used only in Speed Density Systems & prob TAD/TAB, etc.

Also add the ign Control Module from the Bronco & check wiring for any changes.

96 5.8 have no TAD/TAB etc in Air Injection (AIR), Secondary Air Injection, but 96 5.0 does have YAD/TAB and associated wiring & vac lines.

96 non Calif would have 3 Cats and wiring back to PCM; other years are diff.

IF it is a 5.0 & Since 98 engines are set-up for ODB II;

ALL OBD II Engines have MAF and no Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor; used only in Speed Density Systems;

Bronco Mass Air Flow (MAF) application:

5.0L - 1994

5.8L - 1995 (California)

5.8L - 1996

I have no idea of what else he can do exc to find someome say at a yard that has info or done this type of swap. I spent many weekend days at yards with my dad and uncles swapping engines, but that was a long time ago when LaSalles and Caddy engine swaps were rel ez to do.

I still have a Q on what the Econoline eng is; since 1997 the 5.0 was replaced by Ford w/4.6L 5.4L 4.2L & on-line sources show same engines for the 98 Econoline

Can you snap a pic of the EGR tube too?

It will help with Identification, 5.0 & 5.8 EFI; They use different exhaust tubes to connect the EGR to the exhaust. The 5.0 gets exhaust from the lower intake, while the 5.8 gets exhaust from the passanger exhaust manifold

I have been thinking about how to phrase what I have been trying to 'splain here and it came to me while @ NAPA getting an axle nut socket for the Hummer...

What can be done is to

ignore the Connector on the Van

try to swap all the stuff on the Bronco's engine to the Van's engine, such as those parts I have described in last post; TPS IAC, ECT etc. and plug in the connectors to those that are on the Bronco

Does the van have the MAF sensor in air intake tube(s) to throttle body?

If so, can't use that; have to keep your existing AIR FILTER BOX & Intake Air Temp (IAT); (Air Charge Temperature [ACT] prior to 1992)
