Passing Gear Issues

1993 Bronco 302 E4OD Trans.

When I punch it to go into passing gear the RPM's Rev up but no more speed. I let off the gas a bit and then it kicks in and goes. One mechanic thought there was a back pressure issue in the exhaust but everything is good. Now another mechanic is saying they think it's ignition/spark maybe in distributor, ignition module etc. Transmission shifts fine other than that and engine runs good. Any thoughts?

So I'm trying to wrap my head around this,

so say your going 60 and you want to pass the car infront of you, when you stomp the gas does the transmission down shift?
