nothin but the Tail Lights

ok so heres my problem. when i got my bronco the driver side rear tail light was not working. it would come on when i put my lights on, but thats it. it would not show the blinker or stop lights. the other side worked fine though, and the rear lights worked great. no problems with the tail gate either.

so i went down to a local auto parts store and asked what the guy thought i should do since im pretty bad with wiring. the guy said i probably just had a blown fuse. so i got into the fuse box and replaced it even though the thing was fine, and all of a sudden none of the tail lights would work for the blinker to turn or show the stop light. they would just come on when i turned my lights on. the back up lights and tail gate still work how they should, just the tail lights arent working right. i went back in and put the original fuse into the box, but it made no change. i then took one of those little light bulb things to the tail lights to see if they were getting power, and they were not. so i then tried to put a higher amp'd fuse in to see if it helped, but it did not. my next guess would just be grounding?

Reading your post, I have interpreted it to mean that your tail lights work when you turn on the parking and head lights, but your stop and turn signals do not. Those are separate circuits and powered through different fuses. The turn signals are powered by fuse 5 and the signal lights are powered by fuse 1. The parking and license plate lights are powered by fuse 4.

So first check fuses 1 and 5, (again). If that gets you back to the original problem, the left hand turn signal is connected to the light green with white stripe wire, both front and rear left hand turn signal lamps are hooked to this wire. If only the rear signal fails then the problem may be the connector on the rear cross member under the rear left bumper, wires in this location often corrode and even break off the connector which could lead to a short and blowing the fuse. Do not oversize the fuses that can lead to an electrical fire. If it is blowing the fuse you have a short, find and fix it.

yeah fuses are good. looks like im just loosing connection somewhere back there.

Theres a plug on the drivers side behind the bumper just inside the framerail, maybe your connection is bad there.

That information comes from the EVTM (Electric and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual), the single most valuable book you can buy for your ageing truck. There is one for each year vehicle. Check at ebay about once a week. They come up for sale quite often. (search Ford bronco evtm).
