I'm the brand new owner of a 66 bronco with a 3 sp. manual converted to the floor, and a 289 transplant done prior to 71 (when the 2nd owner bought it). I was told they used the 6 cyl.bel housing, which is why they CUT A CLEARANCE HOLE IN THE FIRE WALL!!! (oh well,$ 1000.00 for an otherwise original & complete truck W/87,000 mi. I'll deal with the hole). my first desire is to inst. a c-4. But I have no idea what to look for as far as compatibility(whew! big word!)or what additional parts are needed to do it properly (i.e. no holes in the walls ). my dad is a ford nut, and owns a repo and recovery agency so I have mucho access to "other fords" I just need to learn what to watch for. I'm also hoping someone can help me with figuring out how to I.D. the motor and the rest of the drivetrain.

Thanks in advance,

JAG :)>-

to ID the original drivetrain (eng., trans., axle gearing) look at your VIN on the glove box. Use that and look at http://www.broncohio.com and look under the tech section for vin decoding. there is a list there that breaks down every year and the VIN #s. This will tell you what your truck originally had in it. As for your axles you have a 9" under the rear and a Dana 30 under the front end.

Bully's correct, the early 6 cyl bell won't bolt to a V-8... a V-8 bell will bolt to a six cyl tranny.

The problem with your engine swap is that they used the 6 cyl tranny and adapter to the t/case. The adapter is shorter on the 6 than on the V-8 trans.

To i.d. your motor, the engine casting number is located above the starter on the block, it can be quite difficult to find and or read, depending on how dirty your engine is and how much light you can get in there.

The tranny will have a tag riveted to the side of it, the code will be "RAT" "RAN" OR "RUG"

The original t/case will have a non "T handle" shifter, but would still have a straight shift pattern, it will be a Dana 20.

EDIT...The early 289's (pre 65 1/2) had a five bolt bellhousing pattern...

they may match up to a six cyl bell, but I don't have the info to verify or deny that...
