Unveiled this year at the North American International Auto Show, a concept version of Ford's pioneering 1960s sport utility vehicle retains the original Bronco's authentic, no-nonsense design and adds a turbocharged diesel engine for added kick.

While other sport utilities become more civilized, the Bronco concept bucks this trend in a simple two-seat design that features the same rugged good looks as its predecessor. It is instantly recognizable in shape. Reminiscent of the original Bronco are its boxy, upright roofline, short wheelbase, signature round headlamps and the Bronco name integrated into a modern three bar grille.

Bronco_Profile.jpg

"True to its heritage, the Bronco concept is a tough, genuine SUV that's all about function," says J Mays, Ford Motor Company group vice president of design. "It's like a claw hammer in a box full of department store, battery-operated, plastic, power tools."

Subtle exterior details include exposed door hinges, cowl vents, flared wheel wells and unique loop-shaped door handles, which are integrated into the door panels and open with a gentle tug. Those classic round headlamps up front are updated in the Bronco concept for use of both light-emitting diodes and halogen light sources to cast a wider ray of light for better peripheral vision in off-road situations.

For a more open-air ride, the Bronco concept's roof is made up of two separate sections, the rear portion of which can be removed. Roll bar accents can then be attached for a look that recalls a Baja racer or the customized "Baja Broncos" Ford offered in the 1970s.

A monotone color scheme flows seamlessly from the Bronco concept's exterior body panels to its interior surfaces.

A monotone color scheme features warm metallic gray finish coupled with brushed aluminum accents and flows seamlessly from the Bronco concept's exterior body panels to its exposed interior surfaces. Both seats are trimmed in orange brown suede, like a workman's glove, and are accented with similarly colored inserts and a four-line stitching pattern, like the kind found on a rugged old tool belt.

"The Bronco concept is like your favorite pair of worn in, faded jeans

I like the idea of the diesel engine. When this truck is introduced I will be very interested. It will accent my '74.

Sadly, you'll never see live axles from Ford again, nor will you ever see anything bigger than some 32" sized metric tires being offered, if they're even available that big as an option. Being a FWD little SUV, I wouldn't expect much from it, other than looks

(this is my first post here)

I have owned many broncos. my first being a 78, the next an 85 then an 86 and finally, my 95 xlt. I have loved and lost nearly all of them in numerous stunts and accidents. The new bronco looks pretty sweet. It could have been done better, but the resemblance to the old scouts looks pretty damn cool. It'd be a mean addition to any subdivisioned housewife's suburban arsenal.

I think the retro styling is good but the mechanicals are pure yuppie mobile. Too much electronics and an overly complicated drivetrain. Give me a 4.6 liter V-8 and a good non electronic Dana drivetrain. The original was very simple mechanically and this one shoud be too.

They still sell lots of Jeeps using simple drivetrains.

anywayz I like he idea of a new retro Bronco > but i think the design needs improvement. I dont particularly like the grill, reminds me too much of a hummer. Next > I do not like diesel, just personal opinion.

Definately needs to be ******* for my taste as well :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I just can't get oer the FWD. I also can't get over the stock puny HP Rating(128). **** my moms PT Cruiser has more HP than that. I think that it looks cool and all, but even though it looks like a Bronco it sure as **** sounds like it won't drive like one. Ins't that what made the frist bronco so popular? Isn't that why we drive them today? You could actually take it off road to places that no one had gone before (as a weekender). Besides with all this new Tech crap sounds real good, but it turns something as wonderful and pure as a 4X4 into an AWD vehicle. All and all this new Bronco(in name only) sucks. I would defenently not trade my old 86 for a new one at any cost.

The new Bronco is ok. I don't like the tailgate though, or the fact that it's FWD. What were they thinking?

i like the outside design with retro quews and the nitrous but the fwd is another story. desiel would be fine with a powerstroke and 650 lbs ft of torque at least for the show. ford should revert to old tactics and base it on an f-150 with similar drivetrain and engine options. but none of the touchey feely stuff like dvd players for the kidlets. we need another wrangler killer!!!

It'd be great if we could get our Bronco parts supply guys ( JBG, Wild Horses, James Duff, Tom's, and others) to come up with a concept to pitch to Ford. I bet they could come up with a Bronc that would fit in today's vehicle market and still have the genes of an early Bronco. I seriously doubt Ford would even pay attention. We can hope for now.
