new 84 bronco

Hey all, I just bought an 84 bronco with the 302 engine. I have been reading the forums for the past couple of days looking for ideas on what to do to it and I ran across an article from a while back about a homemade K&N FIPK for about $60. Does anyone know of something similar that I could put on my engine? I have been looking at a bunch of different intake options, but the custom one seems like it's the cheapest.

On the H.O. Mustangs close to your year they had an air cleaner with dual outlets and hoses running to the rad support for a cold air intake type setup, if you can find one of them in ab autowreckers or off ebay or something, that would work

Yep thats the one, try and get one with the hoses. I have one somewhere, havent seen it in years. I wonder what I did with it.

i was browsing air filter options on the k&n website and i ran across some custom air filter assemblies that looked good. i'm pretty new to this, does anyone know what dimensions that i should be looking for? it looks like most of the neck flanges are 5 1/8", but what about the drop base and height? is there a standard size that i need, or do i have a little play with the dimensions?

I'm pretty sure you have a ton of room between your carb and the hood. You really dont need to worry about the hieght of your air cleaner.

I agree, you should have 5+ inches from the top of the carb to the hood. I had enough room to mount up a Shaker assembly ontop of the 4-bbl Holley on my 351W H.O. (before the 460 swap). I have seen a single-tube, cone-filter mount on another Holley carb. THe simplest mod is to run an open element filter, I ran a K&N universal filter for a while.

there really isnt a limit to what sort of intake you can fit onto these broncos, as long as you have the supplies, time, patience, and tools to get the job done.

ive had good luck with K&N and i would recommend them to anyone. i had a part break on my 1994 dakota, and they sent me a whole new intake for free when all i needed was just a new bolt, and that was all i asked for too. best of all, it was sent over night! /

This is more like what I was thinking when I suggested a fullsize K/N. But the one you choose will be just fine.

i read somewhere that the xtrema top actually was worse for permormance...does anyone have any opinion on this?

Dutty, the one you linked to with the chrome cover is what I used before the Shaker. IMO, it's much better flowing than the restrictive, stock air cleaner housing. The style with the open lid should allow more airflow than the lid, but I doubt there's a great deal of difference between the two types. One thing to consider is the amount of dust, dirt, water, etc. that will get into the open-element filter. What's good about K&N is that the filter is soaked with oil, and will catch most of the dust and water. You will need to clean it more often if you travel dusty roads all of the time like I did. IT will also look good with that filter and crome mount. JSM84

I found a good deal on one from ebay and bought it about 5 minutes ago. it was only $45 brand new, its 14" in diameter and 5" tall, its the complete assembly with the chrome top..not the exact size that i was looking for but i couldn't pass up the good deal. summit sells the same exact one for $90

Excellent!!! I think the filter alone is worth that much or more. Post up a pic or two of the set-up when you get it installed. I also agree with the statement of K&N's superior warranty. If you have any problems, they are great about sending a new part, even the filter. I have the K&N FIPK on my 98 Z-71, and the cone filter cracked. They sent me a new filter and clamps overnight for N/C- warrantied!!! Good company to deal with, JSM84
