My recently purchased Ford Bronco is a mystery. VIN# makes it a 1985, the engine block e9ae and makes the block a 1989, the engine side of the fire wall is stamped 1987....please take a look and give me your opinion. I want to know if this is a 302, 351, or whatever. Also knowing the body year will help when fixing or upgrading things. I do know the fiberglass top is newer, was told a tree fell on the old one and that why it has a newer paint job.....so the new top would match. Any help is much appreciated.

The front clip is definitely from an 87 through 91.they may have switched the front clip because of the tree falling on the truck or for looks, but the parts between 81 and 91 are fairly interchangeable. I would go by the VIN number as to the actual year of the truck.

Seems to be a 302 block from 1989, E9AE8015AA82D9, with a Edelbrock 4bbl carb. Definitely not EFI or serpentine, has 3 separate belts.

1985 and based on the stamp on cowling cover it has an 87 front clip.  Based on the position of the coil it is most likely a 351, the 302 had the coil mounted on the passenger side next to the carb.  Also, from the width of the intake and several other things I see on the intake, it looks to be an 85 351.

Where did you get the engine block number from?  If it is an 89 block then someone converted it to a carbed engine.  The stock V8 in a bronco 85 - 96 had an EFI 302 and 88 - 96 had an EFI 351, and  carbed 351s till 88. Even if it were converted I would still expect it to have a serpentine belt system not v-belts.  Then again it could be an 89 short block with the 85 component transfered to it.

A quick check is to look for the head to block joint-on the 302 the joint will be even with the top edge of the timing cover. The 351W will have the joint 1/2 inch above the top edge of the timing cover.

Good luck,

:)>-

This was on the block next to the starter: E9AE8015AA82D9. The VIN # calls for a EFI 351, but the block number states otherwise.

Don't misunderstand, everything is working fine and I have put 900+ miles on it. The only work I have done so far is add a temperature gauge that functions and replace the cap, rotor and plug wires. I will replace the coil and plugs, but will have remove them so I can show them to the parts counter person. I really confused them when I told them it was a 1985 but not EFI. I had to take the cap in to show them what I was looking for since the other 3 rotors they had sold me were the wrong ones, not their fault, I kept giving them erroneous information . I would like to able to say, I have X under the hood and parts guy would have no problem giving me the correct part.

I am just curious what someone was trying to accomplish my taking off the EFI.....simpler to work on if there is a problem in the field?

Thanks for your input,

You have something like I would build with any parts I could find cheap,if it came from the factory with a 351 it would have a carb and no EFI so if it has a 302 one could be put in easily.
