Can firing order reveal the motor block size?

I have a 1989 block (E9AE-8015-AA-82-D9) in a 1985 Bronco (VIN# 1fmdu15hxfla17630) I just acquired. The firing order is 13726548. In my Haynes is lists the 351 having the same firing order and the 302 having a firing order of 15426378. May sound like a foolish question but is it safe to assume I have a 351 and not a 302? I only ask because the seller of the Bronco said he was told that it was a Jasper 302 under the hood when he bought it. Very pleased with my first Bronco and drive it daily....just want to be able to talk intelligently when I walk into the parts store.

Thanks,

The firing order was changed on some 302W engines.  I don't have the data on which ones, but meisk5 probaly has the info in his records.  Check where the heads attach to the block near the water pump cover, (302W is pretty much flush and a 351W is about 1/2 inch above the cover).  If you know someone with a 302W or 351W, measure the width of the intake from head to head and compare with yours.  The 351W is about 2 inches  wider than a 302W.

Good luck,

:)>-

yo Rock,

It's not easy to pick a 302 from a 351 in a line up.
One quickest and easiest way to ID a EFI302 from EFI351 is to inspect the EGR system.  They use different exhaust tubes to connect the EGR to the exhaust. The 302 gets exhaust from the lower intake, while the 351 gets exhaust from the passanger exhaust manifold.  Much quicker and easier than measuring the lower intake.

The positive ID is to measure the lower intake
302 is aprox ~ 8  inches wide
351 is aporx ~ 11 inches wide

Thanks so much for all the advice. Pictures sure help a novice like me. Problem is I did not include the most important detail, this is not a EFI, it has a new Edelbrock 4bbl carb on it.

I'm thinking best way is to remove oil pan and read the number inside.

Thanks again,

Dave
