I NEED A NEW FUEL SENDING UNIT AND AM HAVING SOME TROUBLE. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT. MINE IS A 87 WITH THE 5.8 NON FUEL INJECTED. NONE OF THE PARTS HOUSES CAN GET THIS UNIT, NOR CAN THE DEALER. THE JUNK YARDS ARE ALSO OUT. I CAN FIND ONE TRU JC WHITNEY, BUT IT SAYS IT WILL FIT A 87 TRU 90. THE JUNK YARDS SAY IT IS FROM 80 TO 91 THAT FITS, AND ONES ON E-BAY LOOK MUCH THE SAME BACK IN 78 AND 79. I COULD DO WITH JUST THE PLASTIC PIECE WITH THE PRINTED BOARD INSIDE IF IT WILL FIT. HAS ANYONE HAD THIS PROB BEFORE? AND CAN YOU POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION?

Well, here's the deal. 87's were fuelie trucks, SOooooo, if you have a carb'd truck then some previous owner thought it would be a swell idea to ditch the fuel injection for a carb and considering it's a 20yr old truck that may have happened anywhere along the line. The ONLY info I can find on a sending unit for an 87' is for the fuel injected trucks WITH an in-tank pump. They aren't cheap but that's what those puppies run ya. Unfortunately what you now own is some amalgamation of fuel injected & carburetated parts and it's going to be up to either you or your checkbook to sort it all out. 87', 88' & 89' are the trucks you want to be scabbing parts from. The junkyard guys sometimes know this & sometimes don't. The guys with a Hollander interchange manual right in front of them will be the ones you want to listen to. ALWAYS go to the junkyard with the **** crusty old guy who spits tabacco & looks like he's been there since the 1930's. The one's with a bunch of high-school kids might be good for cheap parts but NOT good info, look for one with a big huge greasy manual on the counter (if the manual is less than 10" thick it's not the right one) with "Hollander" printed on the cover <grin> I *really* don't know if you can just get a sending unit by itself without the attached fuel pump (GOD I hope so since I have an 88') or if you can just strip off the pump and use the sender. I'm sure one of the Mods will jump in soon enuf with a better idea but that's all I have for right now.

THANKS, BUT MINE IS FACTORY CARB. THIS IS THE PROB I KEEP RUNNING INTO! I CHECKED WITH THE LOCAL DEALER, AND THEY SAID THAT IN EARLY 87 WITH THE 351 YOU COULD GET CARB. SO NOW WHAT DO I DO? IT WOULD BE NICE TO KNOW HOW MUCH FUEL I HAVE! BUT YOU ARE RIGHT, I HAVE LEARNED TO STAY FAR AWAY FROM THE PLACES WITH THE TEENS AND THE COMPUTERS. I MEAN WHY DO YOU NEED TO KNOW IF MY BRONCO IS 4X4( I HAVENT SEEN A 2 WHEEL DRIVE YET IN FULLSIZE FORM) TO GET WIPER BLADES!

Well, sure. I guess it's certainly *possible* that you have an early build date 87' with a carb'd 351. I'd ck the VIN to be absolutely sure of this and if THAT's the case then just consider it a 351 equiped 86'. The tank & everything else should be 86' vintage and that's what I'd call it. I'd ALSO just call one of the Bronco specialists like Jeff's Bronco Graveyard and spend some time chatting with them.

If it's an original carb'd 351 then you'll be wanting one of the following senders (again, call Jeff's to be sure which one you need)

http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-30251_...t_33_gallon.htm

http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-30251A...__33_gallon.htm

The first is an OEM sender, the second id a stainless aftermarket. Personally, *I'd* go with the stainless so you're not doing this again in 7 or 8 yrs, but that's just me.

Yeah, those are the same kids that when you tell them you have a *full-size* Bronco ask if it's a 6 or an 8 cyl. Makes you wanna slap someone in the head.

thank you very much. i have always had 78 and 79 Broncos, this one is new to me. i just wanted someone to tell me that the 80 to 86 was the same i guess! yea, the first thing i did was check the vin. i bought this sight unseen for 500 dollars. it was from a distant family member, and it ran good, so i couldnt turn it down. when i popped the hood and saw a carb, i started checking the numbers, i knew it couldnt be right, but there it was....factory!!! again thanks a lot..

You can also give Ford a call. Give them your VIN & they'll send you a copy of the build sheet for your truck & that should include all the info you'll want or need since you have a crossover Bronco with someof the 80-86 mechanicals in the 87-90 body. Also just by way of a little extra info the 80-96's are generally lumped together because they all share the same dimensions and parts will prett much swap between all of the years, however, they *do* break down into subcatagories. You have 80'-86', 87'-90' & 91'-96' with real diffrences between them being the nose & tailgate trim. You can swap noses between years but it pretty much has to be swapped as an entire clip (ie. 92' fenders won't work with an 85' hood & grill but the entire front clip can be swapped on & it'll fit just fine). Tailgates will swap between all years but the tailgate skin is different between groups because of the various trim packages that were offered.
