I have an 89, 351, fuel injected (eddie bower trim) ford bronco. Has anyone had any problems with their ignition switch? The physical switch seems to strip inside the steering colum and just turn and turn, round and round. (cant even turn the electric on) I've replaced it 3 times now!! (frustrating) And it has broken once every year for the past three years. I'm putting in a remote starter in as we speak. I was wondering if anyone has tried to put a remote starter in an 89. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

To Clarify:

i have broken the cast aluminum bar that goes from the lock cylinder on my 89 down to the actual switch on the steering column under the dash. If that breaks then your lock will just spin. in my 85 i bypassed the switch completely for start function and use a push button. I turn the key to on, flip a toggle and push a button. This wasnt to fix the problem you speak of but because someone lost my key at one point. But this does remove all the strain on the cylinder during cranking.

do you know exactly which part is breaking?

Veronica,

I am sorry, I don't know anything about installing a remote starter system, so I can't be of any help there.

Also, I am not sure if you want any help with installing your ignition switch, since you stated that you had done so a few times before.

Here are a couple of threads with pictures, that *may* be helpful, perhaps you are leaving a step out, or something.

These two threads may be helpful

Good luck with both projects,

that cast aluminum piece is what i broke. instead of replacing it i just drilled and tapped the rod and screwed the thing back together with some metal puddy on the threads of my *****. It has been working for 2 years now:) The part is only a few bucks from the dealer but i needed it fixed in a hurry. Thankfully when it broke on my the ignition was actually in the ON position so i could start the vehicle by crossing the terminals on the starter relay, and thankfully this way bypasses the clutch switch cause i was by myself:)
