I currently own a 1990 XLT 302 with 2 push buttons (low and reg 4x4). The buttons are giving me trouble my automatically turning on while driving on the x-way. I wanted to resolve this situation by converting to manual hubs (warn). Also will the manual hubs be easy to switch over when installed for a woman becuase my girlfriend will drive the truck when weather is bad. Is this conversion possible and easy? Will changing my hubs affect engine or drivetrain? Should I get the premium hubs and conversion kit? I just would like to know more information and the processes before I am going to shell out money I dont have. Thank you!

Am I understanding you correctly- your push button switches are engaging on their own? Can you hear / feel the truck going into 4 wheel drive or is it a ***** up with the inidcator light and not the transfer can actually shifting.

If the truck is shifting, then you have some type of electrical problem that needs to be fixed. That system is only designed to shift up to 35mph. You risk serious damdage if the truck shifts on its own going faster. $-)

The manual hubs will keep the front wheels from engaging, but your front driveline (driveshaft, axle shafts) will still spin if the truck shifts into 4WD. Again, more important to have the switches fixed. There are several posts on here about which hub kit you need and whether or not you need the conversion kit.

All of the manual hubs I have seen are easy enough for the girlfriend to operate. I did see a trick once where a guys wife struggled to turn the hubs becase she had long fingernails. His solution was to take a large socket (1inch i think) and cut out notches to fit over the center bar in the hub, and put it on a ratchet for her to be able to use to lock the hubs.

Hope this helped some.

Here is some stuff that should help you out.
Diagnosing Electric Shift 4x4

Transfer Shifting section out of the owners manual.

Instruction sheets from Warn

If you switch to manual hubs, you only need the "conversion kit" if your original hubs have 3 screws holding the cap on.

Good Luck!

Also, this is probably a stupid question but when converting to manual hubs does that include the rear ones as well?? I am very new to this truck scene.
