Darn, what a week I'm having! First my internet goes down, (using the neighbors network now) then that cel code 0401 pops up again. ( 96 fullsize w/5.0 auto and cold air intake.) I have cleaned the egr and verified it's working. I pulled off the throtlebody cleaned it and all the passages and ports, installed it with a new gasket, and all was good... for a few days. (the dpfe sensor is less than a year old) then I got the code again. Today I checked the sensor and it had water drops in it!!! Anybody else find this? I also hear a ticking timmed to the pulses in one of the hoses to the sensor. The ticking is comming from the back of the motor behind the manifold. (it's too packed and hidden for me to see more.)

Anybody got any ideas? I'm going on a 1500 mile trip and don't need the wife all tence and worried.

Thanks in advance.

I too have had this issue I just keep clearing the p401-402 codes for about a month ten had the egr sensor replaced for the second time seems to have done the job. Being the mechanic did the work he replaced the bad sensor for free. The original sensor lasted about maybe a year or close to it...Dunno maybe some crappy sensors out there or me running the truck in some high water at times. According to what I have read on the p401-402 you do NOT need to fix it right away but should within a week period. I have not noticed when running my truck with codes active any sort of change in engine performance nor any rich or lean smells from the exhaust. 96 bronco 351w motor. I am not a mechanic these where my experiences. Good Luck

yo,

If it wasn't a Genuine Ford Motorcraft DPFE, get another via Amazon

$59.50 w/free S&H

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001BS9K3I/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new

Local deealers wanted 150 + sales tax here

Test it first, but some moisture isn't good altho some say it does not matter.

new Plastic replacement version is MOTORCRAFT Part #DPFE15

Testing in a 96 5.0; "...DPFE comes in as .15 VDC during KOEO test between REF & Ground. TOMCO says it should read 0.45 +/- 0.25 volts for the .55 volt for this original Aluminum type sensor My Ford PCED/EVTM is frozen, so I can't view Ford's +/- values. &, when pulling REF hose off, fine particles fell out of DPFE. So, figuring DPFE Sensor is bad according to Ref voltage and particles... Yes, your voltage of 0.15V on the DPFE line is a typical sign of a bad one. Try to obtain a Motorcraft replacement, as the retail part store pieces don't last..."

Testing & Vacuum/Voltage Parameters & pics on both older Aluminum & Newer Plastic Version; MIESK5 NOTE: only 95 5.8L California models & all 96 have the DPFE Sensor instead of EGR Valve Position Sensor (EVP); Ford also calls the DPFE Sensor an EGR Pressure Valve; my 96's Ford pn is F4ZZ9J460-B; new Plastic replacement version is MOTORCRAFT Part #DPFE15 Source: by tomco-inc.com

Ticking from behind manifold is prob a check valve that rusts out; mine was rusted badly and causing an exhaust leak type sound a few yrs ago; here it is in a diagram by Steve83; or air diverter valve.

for Ford PNs on any above get it in;
