Hi,

i am slowly getting to know my '76, and its little "quirks." lately it has been slow to start, but starts. not electrical, and seems to be more of a carb problem. last night, it was giving me a little trouble, so i revved it pretty good to i don't know, but clear it out in a sense. Conked out. Wouldn't start back up and there was a pretty good smell of gas during my repeated attempts, so i thought maybe i flooded it and left it for the night.

this morning, still wouldn't start so i took the air filter off the carb was pretty dry, so i poured gas into it and it started up for a second or two, then stopped, made a backfire like sound (but quieter), and a little flame came out of the carb.

i have a haynes manual coming, but of course it hasn't arrived yet, so does anyone have a suggestion? i am going to try the fuel filter and pump, but i am a little blind without documentation.

thanks.

By your carb being dry, what do you mean? If you move the linkage by hand doe it squirt a jet of gas into the carb? A backfire probably has to do with timing. Rather than spend money throwing parts at it, why don't you take a little time to see if you have a carb problem? A new filter ain't a bad idea, but why replace the fuel pump without knowing if it is really bad, (pull the line off the carb and turn the engine over to see if it is pumping ( catch the gas in a jar)). Get a fuel pressure gauge, if necessary, and see if it is supplying about 7 PSI.

Troubleshoot it first rather than shotguning it.

What Eng..?

302... I can almost guarantee you slipped a tooth (timing chain & gear)while reving the eng.

A blessing in disguize...better it did it there than on the trail.

If you move the timing & it starts...don't be fooled. It will run for a while but will repeat the prob.

1) check timing

2) rotate eng. back & forth & view how long it takes the dist. rotor to move...lots of slop = bad chain & gear.

Backfire through the carb = TIMING

"Carb" problems are almost always timing problems.

Except for once, when I had a cracked intake valve.

Get yourself a Vacuum gauge and research how to use it. It's easy, and can tell you everything about how your engine is running.
