I don't know what year and engine you have, but black smoke and plugs is most definitely caused from running too rich. A few more details might help with more specific suggestions.

Good luck,

Sounds to me to be bad valve seals wich will lead to oil getting into the combustion chamber thus making black smoke.

a faulty fuel pressure regulator can cause engine to run to rich. but if black smoke is only at start up or when u stop and take off again i'd go with bad valve seals....

I thought black smoke was fuel rich and bluish smoke was oil, Black dry plugs are carbon fouled, black wet plugs were oil fouled. The same reason semi's roll black smoke taking off from stop signs, the turbo's arent spooled up so they are running rich. Sounds to me like you're friends truck is loading up at idle.
