Is there a way to convert the A/C on a 88 that used the R-12 to use the R-134a? ( I think those are the right alphanumeric codes.) Thanks

Yep, go to Autozone or Advance Auto Parts (or your local company) and buy the conversion kit. It is usually 39.00 and has the new fittings, filler hose, coolant and system oil to recharge the system. You have to COMPLETELY remove all the R-12 first. If your old system is empty, such as by a blown hose or something, then it's already empty, if not you will need to have it 'evacuated' by a pro. You put on the new fittings, and follow the instructions. You may want to change the evaporator core but it's not necessary, I converted a system on a buick I had after it blew a hose and emptied all the coolant out. I simply replaced the hose, installed the new kit and charged it up. Easy as pie and worked great.

Some people will tell you that you have to change everything, but I have never found that to be necessary. A shop will tell you that cause they not only charge you out the butt...but they collect and resell your R-12 making more money for themselves in the process. You can do it yourself in no time flat.
