so i pick up a 90 bronco about 2 weeks ago for $500. no idea if it turns over (seller is a friend of a friend and seems pretty trust worthy, being a sailor and a good 'ole boy). but here is the list of 'known' issues;

torque converter needs installed (came with the truck)

brakes all around

fluid change

hang the gas tank

nothing to major right? espcially having friends that are good mechanics.

we set off to work around 9am on saturday. first thing first, get the wheels on so we can move it to the street. well, we decide to do the gas tank and brakes since its already on jack stands and the tires are off. it takes 3 times installing the rear brakes to get them right. first time had we broke the keeper, so i went and got a kit that had the keeper and springs. we redo the job, and use the new springs. go to put the drums back on, boom....we realize the shoes are backwards. so again back to square one, finally (about 3 hours or so later) brakes are done.

in the time we do the brakes, the gas tank is hung. oops, we crushed the plastic tubing that runs from one rubber hose to another, we get that taken care of and we are back in business.

next on the list, fire her up and make sure she runs. oh ***** the seller lost the keys... so i run out to advance and get a new ignition cylinder on order (there is one in the area, just at another store). come back to where the truck is..."hey man, we have some bad news"..... come to find out the 3 wheels that are supposed to be for the truck are for a chevy...wrong d**n bolt pattern.

off i go again to get 5 matching (and new) wheels and tires. set me back a pretty penny, but if any of you are in the hampton roads area of virginia, check out slick trick performance, great prices.

ok, so that takes a couple hours to get there and back. on the way back, stop by advance to get the ignition, nope not there yet. CRAP!! ok, its cool, head back to the truck. we get back and we are getting ready to drop the tranny for the torque converter. issues there in finding all the bolts holding her up. we are losing day light fast. all we have are floor jacks and jack stands on plywood boards since we are working on muddy ground. my buddie decides to hit a neighbor up for a tranny jack, nope, he just loaned it out. we go back to trying to drop the tranny with no success. we decide to wait for the tranny jack.

well, as that mess is going on, i send someone out to pick up the iginition cylinder, that we cant get out....and im not even going to describe the issues there (i was under the truck f**king with the tranny).

needless to say, in 10 hours, all we got done was the brakes.....

go ahead laugh, i am .

and sorry for the long post.

We've all been there. Start out Saturday morning to do a 30 minute job on a $10 part. While under there notice something funny...

Sunday evening and a few hundred dollars later, inform the wife that you will need the Cavalier to get to work tomorrow morning.

Yeah, its a good little car. Mine gets about 35 mpg on the highway so I have plenty of gas money left over for the Bronco!

I've been there. I could have had the gas tank done in an hour. I dropped mine with a half tank in an hour to replace a burnt out pump. That truck will be great when you're done though.

See my thread about the heater core. I fully understand your frustration.

But it does tend to make you love your ride more. It's kind of like new underwear; at first it's frustrating. But after a while, it just becomes a part of you.

Good luck.

I was questioning whether I should add this, but hey - what is a little stupidity among Broncotards. I was doing a brake job and dumped all four shoes on the ground and it wasn't till I had pu the right wheel back on and had the left brakes (hardware and all) off that I realized that there were two different sizes shoes for each side. Oops - almost lost an eye pulling the dern springs back off the right side, tore the master cylinder seal on the right. Went to store got new seal for both cause I can plan ahead knowing my stupidity and got home just to go back 5 minutes later to get the spring spreading tool cause I knew I would need it again eventually.

Do it yourself brake job: $57

Lunch at Arby's between trips to parts store: $5

Bonding with your Bronco all day on a 30 minute job: PRICELESS

Some things money can buy, for everything else there's BRONCO

hopefully we are going to get it knocked out this weekend. the tranny is ready to be dropped and supposedly the previous owner is going to drop it and change the torque converter on friday. if thats the case, we are talking about 4 hours to remount the tranny, front brakes, and fluid change. should go pretty quickly. it all goes really well, i will be driving her home (with a stop at some construction sites) saturday afternoon.

WOW! I've never actually talked to people that have rear brakes... I thought those were like cupholders. They're nice but you don't really need them. haha.

Really though. I don't fool with drum brakes. I don't want to know how to fool with them either. When you have to be related to my dad, there are some things you just don't want to know how to do. Because once he knows that you know, you're doing it from now on.

I usually will do the disk (front) brakes myself and take the vehicle somewhere and have the rears done. Mainly because I've not one time heard anybody say: "rear brakes? piece of cake." So I know that if they arent saying it, what I'll be saying wont sound like "piece of cake" at all. hahaha.

I had a very very drunk brother teach me to do disk brakes. I figured if he was hammered and could get it right, then I could do it. I was right on that one.

Rear brakes? Piece of cake. I had more confidence doing the rears than the fronts when I was starting out. One of the first "customer" cars I ever worked on was my Principals car in highschool. I did his brakes, was quite ironic because we never saw eye to eye if you know what I mean. There is no black magic with drum brakes, the only real trick is do one side at a time and then you will have a "map" on the other side. Very easy.
