89 bII 2.9 Won't go in gear unless I remove vac hose

Ok, I'll try to get to the point... since I've had this B2 it has never ran in overdrive, but in drive, overdrive works.. I really don't think it's the linkage... when in overdrive it would go in gear but acts like transmission is burnt up [clutch slips bad]. In drive, it waits 10 - 15 seconds before it goes in gear. I have driven it like this for 30,000 + miles... Well, yesterday I changed the spark plugs [i don't think it has anything to do with it though. lol] and now it won't go in gear at all, unless I remove the vaccum line that goes to the trans., then when it goes in gear [at 2500 rpm] I put the hose back or it won't shift gears, then it drives normal.

Can anyone help me here or suggest a trans biz that won't rip me off?

I think it may be a sensor problem.

Just don't think I need a rebuild.

I don't know specifically what your problem is, but I suspect it may be related to disturbing the vacuum line going to the modulator valve of your transmission. This line comes off a T at the back of the engine and snakes back down to the tranny behind the distributor, so its easy to ***** it up when working back there. (My BII won't shift properly if I remove and plug the line to the AT.) I would suggest you check ALL of your vacuum lines and connectors (they're all interconnected) for loose/open connections and leaks, and possibly even blockage. You also might want to consider picking up a new modulator valve. (I've never done this on my BII, but just assume they have them.) Good Luck.

thanks for the quick response, i looked were the vac hose goes in to the trany [it is all metal except 3 inches were it hooks to a 3 way "t" at the drivers side rear of the throtle body] but theres no way to see what it hooks to [without pulling the pan]because it just enters into it, how ever i did notice that there are some wires that go to it

that metal hose you said you saw going to your tranny is a vacuum advanced hose so if it gets pinched or is pulled off it will cause weired problems some of which you have said u had

update O.k. i have replaced the tranz filter and put new modulator, that is where the vac hose goes to (hose is clear of blockages or pinch) and i blew it out with some old freon. added new fluid. still doesn't work right. but did go it to gear without pulling off the hose 1 time and that was it. now over drive works in over drive position and doesn't go in o.d. in drive position like it used to. help someone please i cant think of any other stuff to try before i have to spend a bunch of money (aamco said 1500.00 to rebuild) i think thats a bit high. my Friend has a guy that works on his cars and doesn't charge much and when i get some extra cash I'll try him first. unless someone can help first.

drop the tranny pan and check the shifter it has a bunch of teeth also check your tranny fluid it should be red not red with a blackish tent it should be red you might have some brunt bands!!!

and 1500 for rebuilding a tranny is ******** i dont know where you live but i can get one rebuilt any where from 200-500 dollars. i live by pensocola floirida!!!!

and a rebuild kit is 75 bucks its not that hard to rebuild a tranny and a book is like 20 bucks its a great learning experince but i dont like messing with autos any more i love mannuels more fun and easier to to mess with

i live in griffin GA. 35 miles south of Atlanta. it was aamco who told me 1500.

i am interested in trying to do it my self but lately I've not had any spare time because i do a/c work and I'm swamped right now because it has been really hot here'.

were can i find that book?

can i get that kit from O'Riley's?

the fluid color was dark red there was however a black coat of like grease very thin on the inside of the pan, i saw the shifter inside and it is hooked to a sort of piston looking thing like whats in a master cylinder and all that seemed to be OK but now i think i should have had my wife move the lever wile i was under there.

i must add that before i was given this bII my niece had it (in Panama city Fla.) and she over filled the trany with fluid till it came out the check tube , my bro in-law said they stuck a hose down in it and removed it.

the reason they gave it to me was it had a fire under the hood and i towed it up here behind my dodge and spent 60 bucks at the junk yard and rewired the harness and fuse box by the batt.

rebuild kits should be avalible at autozone, advanced auto parts, or O'Riley's auto parts i buy my stuff from advanced and my friends dads shop as for the books haynes or chilton just ask the guys at your auto part store for a book to help rebuild a auto tranny the automatic tranny is a hydrolic system so that thing u were talking about that looks like a piston is pretty much wat puts ur truck in gear
