I just bought a '70 model project bronco. There are two engines: the original 302 (with 84 mustang heads) and a 77 351 W. I want to build an engine with plenty of low end torque for the bronco but be able to achieve decent highway mileage at 70 mph. A nice low rumble from the pipes will be great too!! Which engine should I go with? How much horsepower and torque should I shoot for when building the engine?

The 302 will do what you want....It already has enough HP & torque. Being freshened up will be better yet.

4x4'n is done between 800 & 1500/2000 RPM

Money spent on high HP will be $$ not well spent....unless you're runn'n the blacktop 90% of the time.

Go with the 351 if you can handle 8-10 MPG. (maybe 11-13 with the 302)

Also., the trannie type comes into play here as well.... B)

Take what Bob said into consideration, as I rebuilt the original 302 and I am satisfied with it. If it is the original motor from '70, the HP and torque ratings are already pretty good.

I love my 351W. Incredible amounts of low end torque without a lot of money. However--I'm not sure I'd recommend the swap. It's a lot more of a pain than most will let on to.

I've always wondered about that, thats why I stuck with the original.
