I have a 66 EB that has the stock 289/3sp column shift tranny. I want to keep the column shift and tranny, that is a requirement. I like the fact I could probably leave the keys in it and laugh as some young'en tries to drive off by shifting the TC.

I am trying to up the mileage as I would like to drive this a lot and these gas prices are high, what I had thought of doing was using the 3.8l out of a T-bird. It seems I can get a SC T-Bird 1989-1995 and they usually came with sticks. The engine is what my goal is, the fact that it is a stick is a bonus as I *think* I will need very little ie CPU issues with controlled trannies.

What are your thoughts? Is it possible for me to keep the tranny and just replace the 302 with the 3.8?

Thanks

It seems a 289 converted to EFI with Granny from Beverly Hillbillies behind the wheel will get what 14 15 16 mpg. I will gladly give up HP for MPG.

You mentioned a 289 and a 302 in your first mail, I bet there are a ton of people that would gladly trade your motor for a 6 banger, if its a daily driver a 6 with high gears and smallish tires you could get great milage. I always quess mine gets about 8 MPG with a 12 gallon tank, it limits my driving so i carry a fiver, 2 if iam wheeling. Well I only wheel the truck, i should get a big gas tank but i bought doors this month maybe next month i will get the big gas tank!

Here is what I got 67 stock 170cid with 3 on the tree 410 gears. stock 15inch bias ply tires 15mpg with the plow in the back. Now BFG 33s no plow 18mpg. The 170 just keeps reving no problems yet.

Thanks for the info. I poised the same question on a couple boards and all I get is 5.0 makes better mileage, guess a 5.8 will make even better mileage. I am came across a couple sites and the 3.8 uses the same modern tranny as the 5.0 and 5.8 so I will give it a shot with my 1966 3sp HEF.
