1977 dana 20

Just finished a rebuild on my 1977 dana 20 T-case and i think something might be wrong.  When i place the case into 2WD only the front yoke engages. The rear spins freely. 4 HI and 4Lo appear to be fine.  I have no clue what i did smh

Can you clarify a bit...?  Sounds like the drive shafts aren't on yet..? Or R U bench testing ..?

RU sure the 2 shift-shafts are in the correct position..?

You should feel the ball/spring drop into the indent.

Bench testing, It locks in to all positions with authority. I'm stumped

How are you determining the position of ea. shaft..?  I did mine (on bench) W/O a shifter handle bolted on & was

able to locate ea. gear. As I recall, it was a bit tricky.

i bolted on a new J shifter. I'm gonna look at it again this weekend.

OUCH..!   I would have suggested the mod. & rid of that "J" shifter for a "twin-stick" shifter

beings the D-20 is on the bench.

My "T" shift works fine but I'm tempted, at times, to go with the twin-stick.

if i was planning on keeping it i would have gone twin stick.  But since its restoration i opted for stock.

Hmmmmm.., RU 100% SURE you're shifter is working correctly & you're in the right slots/indents

at the correct time..?

Tried taking the shifter off & shifting by hand...??

A shame to have to gut it again.

Chilly dog-  Did you get it figured out? 

I did mine and I was able to index the shift rods with the cover off and watch what was going on...  If you need pics of how it should look, mine is open on the bench right now.  My D20 is a PITA to shift, so you may think you are in the right spot but with a little extra force it will move again for you.

Really easy to see if you pull the cover off....  

PS...  I am  going to ditch the T shift and go to a twin, because I HATE fighting this thing....
