I have a 1988 Bronco II with the 2.9L engine and A4LD transmission. I seem to be experiencing multiple problems which started right after the flexplate broke. I pulled the transmission, replaced the flexplate, replaced the spacer and the torque convertor and put the transmision back in. The truck would not idle or run over 15 mph and the exhaust was glowing from the exhaust manifold to the catalytic convertor. I removed the catalytic convertor and determined it was stopped up. I found the 02 sensor wires were melted and removed the sensor. The truck will start but initially won't run higher than 1500 rpms. The engine will gradually rise to 2500 rpms but no higher. If I put truck in gear, it will only run 15 mph and does not have enough power to pull itself up hill. I need some help diagnosing this problem. Oil and coolant are OK so I know its not a blown head gasket. When running the truck smells like it is running rich. I would like to get this vehicle back on the road ASAP. Aby help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you replaced the O2 sensor? Is there any difference in performance whille it's cold versus when it's warm?

I would start with checking the timing, make sure the cap isnt faulty or the wires. you can have the coil checked to make sure that it isnt weak, fuel filter could also be clogged. also i think the emission control system by not working properly can cause problems too.

I have not replaced the O2 sensor yet, the connectors were melted when the exhaust manifold was glowing red. The truck was running fine before I had to remove the transmission to replace the flywheel. I had unplugged the O2 sensor previously because I had suspected a clogged catalytic convertor, which is no longer on the truck. When cold it is hard to start, will idle at 800 rpm. When hot it starts easier, idles between 600 and 1000 rpm. In both instances it smells like it is running rich.

Timing is good, new cap and wires, new fule filter. All were replaced just a couple of weeks prior to the transmission issue. O2 sensor wires were melted when catalytic convertor stopped up. I have since removed the convertor and the O2 sensor, the exhaust is the manifold and y-pipe while I am waiting for the new convertor to arrive. I am also waiting for a new connector for the O2 sensor and then will replace the O2 sensor. The truck has run fine w/o and O2 sensor before so I would not suspect that as an issue.

Have you checked codes yet? If you don't have a tester, it's very easy to make one out of spare wires and a 12v test light. I think you can even get codes using your check engine light. If you want to make one, I'll post the link at the bottom. The link also has the codes and their meanings (you'll need the 2-digit codes).

The funny thing about our wee Bronco's (I have one just like it) the dizzy will operate the motor 180* off! Just will not have any power...

Double check that, make sure you have everything plugged in where it was before AND making contact.

You are a frigging genius. I just got of the phone with one of my buddies who has been helping me with the repairs. In the course of that conversation he said "Oh, yeah. When we were trying to get the thing started, Josh and I changed everything over 180 degrees because we thought we had it wrong..."

If that is the problem, I demand your address so I can send you cookies and loose change.
