Here is SeaBronc's response.

I do believe that I see a vacuum hose connected to the end of the switch. If so, it is not a brake light switch but instead it is the vacuum dump switch for the cruise control. On later models the function is duplicated by an electrical pressure switch on the master cylinder, ( the subject of a recall due to defective switches causing fires).

-----------------------------------------

Well... I went out and took a look and Darn if he isn't right!!!

Gotta hand it to the man... He knows his stuff!

I never even *heard* of a vacuum dump switch  /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Live and learn... two things in one day today for me. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

SeaBronc sent me the wiring diagram for an '83

You can see in the upper right hand corner, the vacuum line going to the switch.

The vacuum dump switch is about three inches higher on the brake pedal than the brake switch.

If you are driving with crusie on, and the brake doesn't deactiveate it, then someone may have pulled it off.

that explains alot. when i use the cruise control and stop at a red light all the sudden the eguine kicks up and trys to take off. yea i looked all over for that thing i dont have one. but when i apply the brakes a second time it does deactivate.. hmm something im gonna have to look into...

i took a look on my 85 and its not there. i do have factory cruise control. according to the 84-86 wiring diagram the it pulls right off the stop light switch lt grn wire and from there goes to the cruise amplifier. ofcourse if it was just a vac switch with no electrical connection then it wouldnt be on a wiring diagram.

The vacuum hose that comes off of it loops around and travels through the firewall, just above the gas pedal. It then goes to this canister thing that has a cable that runs parallel to the throttle cable. I am fairly certain that this has something to do with the cruise control.

Hi Matt,

I noteced that you have an extra pedal in there...

It appears the cruise control with a manual trans is hooked up to that extra pedal.

Cruise (Speed) Control (Vacuum ) TSB 90-25-12

Matt LMB...

Please see the link above... cruise will not function normally when the brake lights do not work.

This is a bit off topic, but what the heck.

Yesterday I decided I would check my cruise control. I never used it before.

SO I pressed the on button, and LOL the switch fell INTO the steering wheel!

Gotta laugh at these old trucks, either the plastic breaks, or the metal rots.

So today I took the steering wheel cover off, dissassembled the switch, got it clicking again, and put it back in with bigger screws and washers, and took her for a spin. Son of a gun... the cruise works! I guess the switch was faulty, and the PO pushed too hard and broke the plastic tabs on the switch that hold it in place. I'm guessing it is gonna be a good day today!

joe, my 89 with cruise is a manual as well and has the higher up switch. i did notice the wiring diagram for 84-86 had the cruise wired to the clutch switch. very strange.
