What would cause the Iginition not to work? I can turn the key, and The truck wont even start?

But IF I Jump the Starter... then it starts right up?

Any body else had this problem?

Have someone help you , Take the little wire off the front fo the starter solenoid , Now have a meter ready and have your helper hold the key in the crank position , Check to see if you have 12 volts there if not then go down to the tranny and make sure the neutral safety switch is working properly it will be the red wire with the white stripe when in neutral there will be a connection between the two of them the other 2 wires in there black with a purple are for the backup lights . When you turn key to crank 12 volts goes through the switch to the neutral safety switch , If in neutral or park the 12 volts is allowed to go to the starter solenoid . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

If you had the tranny rebuilt then I feel comfortable in assuming that it is an automatic, if that is the case then I believe it is the starter solenoid. I have the same problem sometimes, I turn the key and here a whine, then i turn it again and it starts. It is very easy to replace just be carful when you pull the wire that is connected to the battery to make sure it does not ground out. On second thought disconnect the negative batt cable before you replace that thing, just to be on the safe side

Good possibility that its the starter solenoid, common prob. It is much easier to diagnose a problem if you add all the info on your truck, ie: year, engine size, tranny. All would be a big help. Write it out in your signature, pays off quickly

When my son's Bronco had this problem, it was the neutral safety switch. You can find instructions for testing and replacing it at AutoZone.com

Pull the starter, use jumper cables, put the positive on the stud and tuoch the neg on the ear in which one of the starter bolts pass through. Hold on tight, if it works no problem then re-install and try something else. If it doesnt work then just replace the starter, saves so much in headaches that way. Not much worse than changing a starter while buried in a mudhole.

Ok I think that if I jumped the solinoid that means that the solinoid is open and it needs to be replaced? Correct?

OR is that wrong?

If you put 12 volts on the small post with the red and white wire and your starter consistently turns over, your solenoid and starter are OK.

Get under the truck and locate the neutral safety switch (usuallyon the side of the transmission; see

http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker/?...l+Safety+Switch

Follow the wire up and you'll find a connector. Depending on which one you have it will have 2, 4, or 6 wires.

Click on figure 27 (correction: figure 26) at

http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?F...23d800a3a41.jsp

for wiring diagram. If the switch is working, it will close in the neutral and park positions, allowing 12 volts to go to the solenoid when you turn the key to start.

You can either unplug the switch and check for continuity in neutral and park, or jump across the correspoding points on the connector, and see if the engine turns over.

Please note my previous post had the wrong figure no. Click on no. 26, not no. 27, for the wiring diagram.

Yeah, I did one. Spray the whole thing with PB blaster first. Mine was a C6 tranny. Yours may be AOD (which I've never worked on) or C6. If your transmission gear indicator on the steering column has just a plain "D", it's a C6. If it's got a "D" with and "O" around it, it's and AOD (Automatic Overdrive). If it's got a little button switch on the end of the shifter to turn the overdrive on and off, its and EOD (Electronic Overdrive). Since you have the Eddie Bauer package and the bigger engine, you prob'ly have the fancier transmission, too.

The Neutral Park safety switch on mine had just two bolts holding it in. The harder part (if you have the C6 tranny) was getting the linkage loose. You need to loosen the nut on the post going into the transmission. You'll have to gently pry and wiggle to get everything off the shaft (I broke my old switch getting it off. Plastic collar had a lot of grit, and it wouldn't slide off the shaft without pressure. But, hey, that was the part I was replacing, so no biggie).

And notice the orientation for the switch. There will be a flat spot or a keyway to make sure the compontents in the switch turn as the linkage rotates the shaft going through the switch.

The Haynes manual should have pictures, hopefully with your model transmission.

ALMOST FORGOT-- the parts stores seem to have a hard time matching parts on Broncos this old. Bring your old switch in when you buy the new one, and inspect the new switch and especially the connectors before leaving the store. Make sure it matches the old one. A lot of them look a like, but may not be compatible.

Happy New Year!

Or just don't use the stock switch go straight to the starter from and spring loaded push button aftermarket switch..then mount it somewhere weird and nobody but you will be able to start the truck. I had a vw with the button under the back seat...people though I was reaching in the back for something and then the car would crank...sorry not helpful but hey I like weird stuff... :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> Now if anybody can figue out why I can never start my 1962 MF135 tractor?????
