Hi all, I have a 85 full size bronco with a 300 inline 6. It has no emisions equipment. If I go to a junkyard to get the components I need, what years can I take the components from that will work in my 85? Also, if I get them from another year bronco, will that bronco have to have an inline 6 engine or will the components work from a v8?

Thanks bill

I don't have an answer for you. I just junked all of my smog equipment a couple months ago because it wasn't working anyway. I'm not sure where you live, but a lot of places don't check for that equipment when they do a vehicle inspection. You might be able to get away without it.

The real reason I decided to write you... you have 39's on your bronc and your pushing them with a 300? I have 33x12.50s on mine with a 300 and I was debating on whether 35x12.50s would be too much tire for that motor. Does the 300 do pretty good with those big tires? Also, you have got to post a pic of that monster. I wanna see it. -Jeff

That all depends on the gear ratio, primarily in your rear end, where you want to set in the recommended power vs best possible mileage RPM range, type of driving you do, etc. the attached chart from Jeff's bronco graveyard will give you the information and formulas you need in making a gearing decision. If you are lacking in power, you need to go up in gear ratio. When changing gear ratio, you also need to change the speedo to keep the odometer and speedometer as accurate as possible.

You will need to stick with components in the range of 80 - 86. There should be an emissions sticker on your radiator support that includes all the functions. Not all functions controlled by the vacuum control valves are for emissions control. At minimum I would re establish the Heat Control valve function as that will give it better start and run characteristics, especially in the winter. Attached is a diagram of an 85 5.8L engine. You can use as many components off a V8 that are the same as the ones on your diagram. The color coded lines are the color of the vacuum lines and each function pretty much uses a different color.

Orange is the heat control valve circuit

Red is main vacuum and those functions feed by it.

Green is the EGR

Yellow is the distributor vacuum advance

White is the feed for things run from the carb ported vacuum

Pink is the thermactor control

blue is the Throttle kicker control

Black is primarily the Evaporative emissions control

OK hope I haven't skipped anything. Collect a sample or two of each VCV in different colors and configurations, (2 port, 3 port, 4 port). The different colors indicate the temperatures that they operate at.

Good luck,

:)>-

Hi CraZAq. The bronco is actualy my wife's. She used to live in california. She bought it the way it is in Hawaii, then had it shipped to ca. When she met me, we had it trailered here to Pennsylvania. It is way illegal for here in pa. I've only driven it about 20 miles on back roads, ran good. My wife said that it ran great on the freeways of ca. Plenty of power and smooth ride. It has been in storage for about 4 years. To make it legal in pa, I have to lower the bumbers and get the tires inside the wheel wells. Smaller tires will take care of the height and width problems. Then I have to get the emisions up to ***** to pass pa emissions standards. We need to get it up and running because our plymouth voyager is on its last leg (trans lost 3rd gear). I am looking forward to getting the bronco on the road again but only have a very small budget to work with. Second hand parts is the way i'm going.

By the way the bronco has a 4" chassis lift and a 4" body lift. This weekend I'll be working on it so I will get a couple of pics and post them. Unfortunately its not as nice looking as it once did, faded paint, surface rust on hood and front right fender. But it still looks menasing.
