Headers

Ive been talking to a friend of mine who has a 302 in his bronco and he ended up putting shorty headers in it. we are talking about changing the exhaust in my 88 with a 351w. Do I go with the shorty or the long headers? This may be a dumb question but to me it is an honest one.

Me working on a vehicle is like a monkey f*#&ing a football.

Any info would be great

Its really just preference and what will allow you to fit what you want in there ( cats, mufflers, etc)

I've got a set of the new Edelbrock headers that are ceramic coated shorty style that will bolt up tp the stock exhaust system. Getting them to fit was a breeze, so far so good.

Summit Racing has them but they are real proud of them.

I saw those at Summit Racing too. I need a set for my 1984 XLT, it has the 351 Windsor and it's not easy finding headers for it. Any suggestions from people who might have done this already?

I got Hedman Headers long tub and they fit but i have no cats in mine just straight through dual and everything. and emisiions safe

Thanks for the input, I don't plan to have any cats in mine either, I want new headers that go straight back and out as duals. One question, would you recommend having them exit at the back bumper or right behind the back wheels? The back bumper might cause a good bit of backwash into the truck when the back glass is open. Anyone got input on this?

Mine come out straight out the back by the bumper if you crack the rear window it sucks it in like a tornado.

Yeah that was kind of what I worried about, maybe I will cut it out the sides right at the back edge of the wheel well, or maybe in front of the back wheels.

I like to open mine, I'm in FL and it lets the heat out real fast too. I am planning headers that will each run to the back independant so I just got to figure where they will be in the way the least.

Ok....I did it. I bit the bullet and bought the Headman Headers, the long ones, I really like them compared to the short turn downs. They are the thermal coated ones too, might as well spend the few extra bucks now and do it right. Now I have to decide about installing them. Anyone want to offer up the best option for removing the old manifolds without snapping off manifold bolts?

Soak em with pb blaster, mine come off without a hitch though without doing anything to them.

Sounds like a plan man! Maybe a good weekend project. If things go as planned I will soak them Saturday, and remove them Sunday. Hopefully.

Alright, it's done! / I started work on the Bronco's new Headers Sunday morning at 8:30am and at 2:00pm it was cranked and shaking windows out of the house :-" ! I soaked the bolts in PB Blaster Saturday night and every single one came out without the least bit of problem. The new headers line up perfectly with no problem getting them up and into position, I love Headman!

I did not have any sticking points at all and would tell anyone that this job is very straight forward. The funny part was my right side header, which had a large crack in it, fell off in two parts. It wasn't cracked it was broke in half! And it was definately cooking my starter, now there is no warm restarting issues, it cranks right up! I'm glad to have solved two problems at once!

Now for exhaust, and since there is no bolt on kits (and I refuse to pay $460.00 for duels from the shop [-( ) I am going to fab my own along the same setup style as Freak has on his. Simple, straight and dumps out in front of the rear wheels. I will let you know when it's done and rollin'. B)

glad to hear ya went with the Hedman's mine went on like a breeze too, but i already had headers (cheapos from swapmeat but replaced with the headmans) , only wish it didn't **** in the window so much.

Yeah, I'm hoping to avoid that too much but I know it's not going to be 100% kept out cause of the aerodynamics (**** did I spell that close to being right?) :blush: What I'm putting together now will dump out in front of the back wheels and be turned down and out at about a 45 degree angle. Once It's on I will post a pic.
