Just bought the vehicle a couple weeks ago it's a 95 Bronco with a 351. It has a E40d with a punisher valve body. On my way home yesterday, the vehicle started shifting extremely harsh and the overdrive light was flashing. The speedometer and the odometer are both working correctly and I replaced the VSS this morning hoping it was an easy fix. I unpluged the battery and reset the psom. I checked both fuse 5 + 8 they are both good. Still having the same issues. I'm not sure how to scan the code on the dash. Any other ideas?

Yo eagleonefox,

Welcome!

You can do the self test for codes at home using this info by our pal BroncoJoe... my better-half helps me with this stuff.

http://broncozone.com/topic/14269-code-reader/?pid=74587&mode=threaded

Post Code(s) here according to:

KOEO

&

KOER

Was it a new Motorcraft VSS? AFTERMARKET units are of lower quality. If you have a meter, measure resistance of old vss between the two pins.

See my VSS flow to PSOM & E4OD narrative and Mikey's flow chart here at http://broncozone.com/topic/25458-speedo-issues/?do=findComment&comment=133757

DTC 27, 29, 452, P0502, P0503, PO716, PO718; Insufficient input from VSS.; "...A more difficult problem to identify is a VSS that works, but sends out the wrong signal for a given vehicle speed. In some cases, a wrong reading from the VSS may still cause a code to be set. For example, if the VSS signal tells the computer the vehicle is traveling 60 miles an hour, but the throttle position sensor and MAP sensor tell the computer that the engine is idling, the computer will be confused. And a confused computer should set any of the following codes: Ford 27, 29, 452. On a vehicle that uses the VSS as a safety device, a defective sensor may send out a wrong "too fast" signal, shutting down fuel flow at the wrong time. Although this doesn’t happen often, it can be a difficult problem to identify. The customer will probably describe it as a random or intermittent sudden loss of power and poor performance, only to have the engine resume normal operation. Routine diagnostic checks of the engine in the shop won’t show any problem because there isn’t a problem with the engine or the ECM..." read more

"I don't know about different lengths but, when I replaced mine, the one from autozone didn't fit right. The one from Ford fit perfectly and solved that aspect of my problem. DS1 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) 29 AND 452: CHECK PSOM RESISTANCE

Continuous Memory DTC 29 indicates that during the last 80 warm-up cycles, the PCM detected an error in the PSOM output signal. DTC 452 indicates the PCM detected an error in the PSOM output signal during the last 40 warm-up cycles.

Possible Causes:

Damaged Rear Anti-Lock Brake System (RABS).

Damaged PSOM.

Damaged harness circuits.

Damaged PCM.

Key off.

Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Inspect for damaged or pushed out pins, corrosion, loose wires, etc. Service as necessary.

Install breakout box, leave PCM disconnected.

Measure resistance between Test Pin 3 and Test Pin 6 at the breakout box.

311 koer Thermactor air system inoperative (right side)

"...The computer determined that for some reason the fresh air injection from the Thermactor system was not present. There are several components that make up this system. The initial component is the smog pump. The first checks I would make are the hoses and plumbing from the smog pump back to the diverter valve (behind the pass. cylinder head) and then on to the crossover pipe at the back of the heads and down to the catalytic converter. The check valves that are at the center of the cross over pipe and the top of the metal tube from the cat are often the culprits as they can and do snap in half as the get old. If the plumbing looks to be in good order we can discuss the slightly more complicated aspects of the system. The diverter valve also has two vacuum lines running to it. Make certain they are in place and intact. (Computer needs to be able to control the flow of fresh air by the Thermactor system)..."Source: by greystreak92

Visually inspect for proper vacuum line routing. Refer to VECI decal. Visually inspect Air Pump for broken or loose Air Pump Belt. Refer to Section 13A for adjustment/replacement.

The KOER test requires that after a certain length of time the throttle be opened to bring the idle above 2000 rpm for a short period of time. If the dynamic response test is not performed or the rpm's do not peak ABOVE 2000 rpm's this code will be generated. (Computer needs to compare changes in sensor readings at different RPM's to determine system operation and efficiency)..."

Or...

The brake on/off switch tells the powertrain control module when the brakes are applied. The switch is closed when the brakes are applied and open when they are released. The PCM uses this signal to disengage torque converter clutch when brake is applied.

Symptoms: Failed on or not connected Torque converter clutch will not engage at less than 1/3 throttle. Failed off Torque converter clutch will not disengage when brake is applied.

I will look around the dash tomorrow for a wiring issue. I was poking around yesterday under there checking out how the previous owner wired a spot light and it's also possible that I could have chafed a wire. Didn't think about it really.

I'll also ohm test the new VSS. The old one got trashed and is gone forever. I compared them before installing and they looked the same. Installation was easy, no hang ups and it seemed to fit good.

The previous owner removed the smog pump so that takes care of 311

For 536, I didn't press the brake pedal during either test, could that be why that is showing? All of my brake lights are working.

For 538, I didn't press the gas so is that why I got that code?

Yo,

536, it happens with some code scanners. I asked Action about an issue once and got a dummy on the phone. Told him the KOER test was incorrect.

538 yes. Need to "goose" it, a quick pedal to the metal jab.

THE P.O. may have disturbed the connectors up to instrument panel. Look for loose harness, unwrapped harness, obvious wire hacks...

I replaced the sensor on top of the rear diff. is it possible that the sensor that I'm supposed to replace is inside the tranny? I cannot find any sensors on the outside of the tranny/transfer case. There is a set of gray and black wires going into the tranny on the driver side.

I will keep looking for anything under dash, but as of now I haven't found anything.

the aftermarket vss tested ok. I replaced it with an OEM sensor to be safe. I cannot find any issues with the wiring. Still looking. there is a lot of aftermarket wiring from the previous owner for a cb radio, spot light and fog lights, but nothing appears to be tapped into a factory harness.

Speedo does not fluctuate. Odometer is reading correctly.

There are no breaks in the wiring, all connections look good, no corrosion or bent puns, female connectors are all flush and not pushed in.

Could it be some sort of internal fault in the cluster, when I removed the cluster there was a date of 11-16-15 on the back. Looks like previous owner replaced it or sent it out. DNA Speedo is a couple miles away and I've done business with them before. is it worth having them look at the cluster?

Yo,

DNA ... great guys There! They tested my clusters PSOM a few years ago and found it was a a-ok. Didn't charge a dime! Not even for Return shipping. Tell them that I recommend them to many Ford owners on the www.

So, yes, they can test it and clean it all up if there is any corrosion or leaks.

Here are more tests for DTC 452

Yo,

Remove driver side kick panel and inspect for water damage, etc.

The instrument cluster connectors occasionally have oxidation problems, and only gets worse with age.

The more I look at the wiring diagrams I suspect PSOM IS OK.

WIRING IN PSOM CONNECTOR TO PCM MAY BE THE ISSUE.

psom.jpg PSOM Connector pin 7 to PCM IS GRAY/BLACK THROUGH SPLICE 246 is in Main harness, near T/O to speed control amplifier; amplifier is under dash, driver side, see attached image

Ok so got my cluster back today and it fixed my issue. Took them 2 days. They didn't tell me exactly what they fixed but it works. Total was $150. Thanks for the help!
