wider tires?

I have a 1989 bronco with 31's right now. I have considered a lift ( in the future) and a few other larger tires, but I was wondering if anyone went wider instead of just going up? I know I can get 33's under it without lifting, but can i keep 31's and go wider? Anyone done this or have any suggestions?

If you go wider than 9.5, you will need new wheels with wider rims. If you stuff wide tires on stock rims you have the possibility of popping a bead and loosing control of the truck.
