which model to buy?

i am looking to buy a late model bronco - mid 80's to 96. is there any certain distinction mechanically between these models?

the one i am looking at right now is a 89 that needs a new motor. would this model be a good project bronco with a new motor and trans?

The biggest difference between the years (80-96) is the rear axle, tranny and body styles. All broncos have great potential, check for the typical rust spots (wheel wells tailgate rockers)

Also the '88 and '89 models have two fuel pumps, one on the frame and one in the tank. Means higher cost for fuel pump if it goes. any other wiring problems you need a wiring harness from those years only. Other than that its an awesome rig, you cant go wrong

i believe the biggest changes are mainly in the drivetrain. the body styles do change slightly between the 80's and the 90's as well as a few minor changes with the interior. engine weise, i think that the only real difference is that they stopped offering the 6 cylinder option.

KT, first let me welcome you to Bronco Zone!!!

The Bronco engines changed from carburetors to fuel injection in 85/86, and I think that would be a big factor in which model you choose. Some folks like the EFI and others the carb. I'm a carb man. You can convert a motor from one sytem to anothre, but it can be expensive and take alot of work. Check thru the forums and the sticky or pinned posts at the top of Page 1 of this forum (80-96 Broncos) for info on Horsepower, torque options, etc. for the various year models. IF you have a particular Bronco in mind, post some more info on it, like type of transmission, engine size, and style of 4WD (manual or electric shift). JSM84

personally the front end of the 87-91 are disgusting compared to the other years.

hey i love my front end. thank god they didn't make one with that sloped front end they started putting on the f150's in 97.

I have a 91 Nite with the 351 and E4OD trans. At 150,000 miles it still looks OK (just starting to go bad) and some things will require more attn. I need to upgrade my 4X4 selector motor as described on this forum, just rebuilt the Cv joint at the back of the case, needs a front ujoint, just got ball joints, and has developed a manifold leak. Typical little irritations of em but worth it. IMO, the 351 is the way to go. I get 14-16 MPG with stock 31" tires and a 3.55 gear. Better towing power as well. I drag my sleds with it and average almost 13MPG at 75+mph.

About the ugly flat nose on the 87-91, the Nite is the only one that never bothered me. I had 2 89 F250s w/460 autos. ***** but way fast and powerful. 92 was a MASSIVE improvement.
