I've heard to weld on a gas tank it should be full. Of what? GAS??? or water? I just got mine back from radiator shop after having it boiled out and he said it could be welded empty but still smells like old gas.

The crack is right at the seam of the filler neck into the tank(rear). As a general rule I dont weld gas tanks. ahh heck maybe I'll just JB weld it.

There is a chemical you can use to neutralize all reminants of gas fumes.

Then it can be welded when full of WATER..!!!

BUT...... talk to a weld shop & get the correct proceedures.

I did my aluminum boat tank this way... no prob.

There is some stuff called Marine Tex sold in most Marine shops for sealing gas tank leaks. Its hardens in gas to!

The cool thing is it hardens like steel (way stronger than JB Weld). When you grind this stuff it gives off a spark due to the metal contenet in it. Very stong stuff.

If its right where the filler neck goes into the tank chances are its solder . I powdercoated the tank in my 91 and when I opened the over there was a bright shiny ring floating around the filler neck thank god I hung it level . So if yours is the same way you may be able to fix it with a hot air gun that would remelt the solder and have no open flame . I have welded on tanks before and I just filled them with water but any space at the top of the water will have flame on it if it ignites so dont freak out if this happens just add some water . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

It helps to read....Was buying a new tank out of the question because of money or what? I say this because my Main tank was leaking at the sending unit, so I pulled it and ordered a new 1. Was this wrong? Should I try and keep all original equip. on the rig? Thanks!

I wouldn't try it. I have heard that gas molecules are embedded in the metal of the tnak (whihc is why it smells of gas), and when you torch it they will boil off and BOOM!...Might end up with part of that tnak embedded in your forehead!.

I have heard that they weld them underwater.

WHy not get a new tank?
