What year truck is this? Put some of your truck vitals in your signature. That often helps with the answers you get. If there is any electrical load on when the RPM drops below normal idle, I would expect to see the meter go to the discharge side since the alternator isn't turning fast enough to provide the truck requirements. As for the check engine comming on when it stops, that is probably normal. I don't know about your particular truck, but lights like that often come on as a check to see that they are working when the key is turned on and the engine is not running.

Good luck,

its a 92 with a 302 5.0, when u say electrical load do u mean like subs and a system? cause ya i got that but it didnt do that before. i changed the air filter cause i thought that could be a reason and it helped a little but when i parked again it went below idle twice, but did not die. the engine light doesnt come on either. i also bought a new fuel filter cause i saw that reply on some other topics, but im not sure how to install that but i do know where it is, would the oxygen sensor have anything to do with it?

I was talking about the fact that the meter went to the discharge side when the engine idle was way down, not that the load was the cause of the idle being down. If the idle is not high enough the alternator can not supply the load requirement so the current must come from the battery instead causing the meter to show discharge.

If the air filter helped then you may have a problem with the Throttle Position Sensor sticking or going bad. A clogged fuel filter would give more problem on the high rpm side than on idle since the fuel demand is least at idle.

If you are getting a check engine light before it stops, pull the codes to see what they are pointing at.

Good luck,
