Had some bad weather around here lately, and had an opportuniy to put the Bronco in 4wd for the first time since having the transmission/transfercase rebuilt. I noticed today that when driving in 4x4 that there is a slight whine from the transfer case similar to the sound of a turbo spooling. Not loud, but just noticeable. Anyone else ever notice this. My theory is that because it's geared so tall (a PO swapped the 3.55's for 4.10's) and i'm only running 31's that she is just spinning faster than usual. I know that everytnig is fine mechaincally, just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience or if my theory makes sense. Thanks.

my bronco doesn't do that but my s10 does. thats how we can tell when it actually clicked into four wheel drive. lol. i'm not sure if the two are conected but shortly after we started hearing that whine the four wheel drive crapped out and we got stuck several times.

All of them whine in low gear going faster than 15 mph, were you in high?

Have you checked the gear oil yourself since the rebuild? Perhaps drain it, inspect it for shavings and replace the ***** even consider adding some Lucas treatment.

I was in 4Hi - going 55-60 - and I filled the transfer case myself about 2 months ago and used Lucas as well. Again, there's not a problem and I'm running fine. Was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I'd second the opinion to be SURE the level is cool, truth be told they don't take much so you might want to swap it out for synthetic. The gear swap shouldn't make a difference since all *that* did was to bring the driveline revs back into the ballpark they *should* have been in the first place. Some xfer cases are louder than others, this is a hard one. If the level's good there isn't much to do except run it. You *might* be looking at a componant failure but then again it might just be regular noise for your unit, no way to tell w/o breaking it oopen and I doubt anyone will recommend *that* just because it makes some noise. It IS a chain drive after all.
