I've got a 74EB with a 351W and recently rebuilt auto trany. Now for some reason in jumps out of 2high. It will run fine in 4high(not lock in of course) and after a mile or so I can pull over and it will go back into 2 high for 5 or 6 miles before jumping out again. Anybody got an idea of what this could be? I'm hoping for something very simple and inexpensive since I

that might be true for a newer transfer case, but the older EB cases are all gears inside of them. No electronics. Sounds like your case might be in need of repair, the jumping like that makes me think that it is worn, which is to be expected for a 35 year old case that probably has never been cracked open. Wild horses sells the master rebuild kits with everything needed here. It will set you back on your disc conversion for a while, but if it needs it....

Can you tell me how hard it will be to pull it and use the kit to re-build it? Is this a project I should hire this out or do it myself? I've got basic knowledge "no gear head" I'll also have a couple friends with much more knowledge than I helping on the project. Thanks for the info. I've already had the linkage checked the guy said it was fine, thanks for that as well.

I have never rebuilt one myself (but I have taken them apart), but I have done WWII Jeep transmissions (Willys - T-19 tranny) and they are fairly simple. If you take your time and pay attention, you shouldn't have a problem. You can also call a tranny shop & ask them what they would charge you to rebuild a Bronco Dana 20, J-shift, transfer case. If it is less than $200, ****, let them do it. For me personally, if it is over $250-275, I am going to do it myself. The D20 case is realitively simple in it's makeup, so I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Here are a couple of good sites to look at if you decide to do it yourself. You might also have one of your friends standing over your shoulder just to offer some help, if you need it.

Hmmm., heard this B/4

Poping out of gear could be a simple fix......If you choose to re-build....go for it. ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Just got word from my mechanic he believes the only problem was a worn out shifter. Was not staying locked in to 2 wheel high because it was worn staying in 4 high because it hasn't been in that position much so it wasn't worn out. Makes me a little more at ease now that he doesn't have to tear into the T-case, he was still going to take a peak at the T-case just to make sure.

I had the same problem with the transfer case jumping out of 2H with certain road conditions. My fix was to replace the two five dollar shift springs in the transfer case that hold the detent ball bearings in place against the shift rails. Haven't had the problem repeat since I did the replacement.
