That weird little clanking sound

I know most people have had that one little click or clank, but this one is driving me crazy and I need some help. (the clicking is only in the front axle)

It only happens in 4 wheel drive and i have shift on the fly (96). It clicks in both drive and reverse and it sounds like its coming from behind the brakes. Although the 4x4 still works. Now for the weird stuff, I can drive in 4 wheel drive/low range in reverse and it won't click, and i can also drive forward at about 3mph in low range and it won't click, but the second i go above 5mph in low it starts to click again and it always clicks no matter what in 4 high

Ive asked several "professionals" but they have told me that they don't have a clue. This hole thing has been bugging me for ever and I am hoping for a little help to get this bronco trail ready,

Crank up the stereo! Thats the only advice I have.

but it sounds like its hurting the truck in some way.... it sounds really bad

just start looking into the front axle, starting at the hubs. could possibly be a bearing slightly binding. check your bearings, races, and mounting surfaces for scoring. im kinda stumped too. just allocate a day and start wrenching

cocobum, as you probably know there's a lotta stuff in a 4x4 that can cause a clicking noise. since it only does it in 4 wheel its in front of the transfer case. it could be an auto hub, if you have manual does it do it with the hubs unlocked? if not, start by tearing into the hubs. if it does it with the hubs unlocked,drop ypur front drive shaft and check your u-joints, slip yoke, and then take a good,good, long look at the cup and ball assembly in the c-v unit. or have a drive shaft shop check it for you. if its not in the shaft then pull both front hub,brake,wheel bearing and axles. you'll find it in there somewhere. dont forget the jack stands!! good luck :wacko:
