I have a 78 bronco and it has fixed side windows, i found some sliding side windows at a junk yard and would like some pointers on switching them out.

Good find! Those are hard to get in any yard here.

To begin with here is the Camper Side Window (Fixed & Slider Glass) Parts Break-Out Diagram in a 78 w/Nomenclature

JR Wrote elsewhere; "...PRE-EMPTIVE WARNING: USE A HELPER TO PLAY "CATCH". DONT USE SCREWDRIVERS OR METAL OBJECTS TO PRY ON THE GLASS. EYEPROTECTION IS ADVISED IF YOU PLAY ROUGH.

In order to get the old window out easily, it needs to be "roped". I used clothesline cord that I got from the local dollar store for a dollar....go figure. It was more than enough cord (100'). From the inside, peel back the rubber and stuff the cord in the rubber track all the way around. Once done, you can shove the window out. It's a good idea to use a spotter. I started at the top rear. Work it out all the way around the window. Dont be afraid, it's tempered glass and it takes a bit of serious abuse to break it. By the time you get the top and one side of the glass/rubber dislodged, it's pretty much out. once both sides are out, lift the window and weatherstrip off the top's ******.

Remove the weatherstrip from the old window. Re-install onto the new slider. I had to "clean" my track with some cleaner and **** it with Ruglyde. Dishsoap also works well.

When installing the weatherstrip, it easiest to start with the sharp corners and finish with the rounded ones. Try not to dislodge the chrome trim pieces in the corner. I didnt tape mine as the factory instructions suggest. I was able to get mine back in with a minimal amount of effort.

Once that's done, **** the inboard slot of the weatherstrip. Starting at the bottom center, run the cord in the slot all the way around. Keep it taught as you feed it around. Overlap the end piece at the bottom.

This is the general idea except I started in the center of the side. I was using the screwdriver to take out the slack. It's really not that critical.

Take the prepared window/weatherstrip/cord assembly and put the bottom track in the ******. Dont forget to put the dangling rope ends through first. Try to center the window in the opening. It should be "started" well enough that you can let go and enter the vehicle. Using a spotter is probably best. He can also help push on the window as it "ropes" in. Once inside, it is pretty obvious. Pull the rope. As you pull the rope, gently pull in on the window or have the spotter push gently. NOT TOO HARD OR IT WILL BIND THE CORD. The sliders (compared to the original windows) are easier to install by onesself as the window can be opened and the frame pulled in. As the cord is pulled it will "****" the weatherstrip and window inward. I like to start in the center and pull toward the rounded corners first. The sharp corners are a little more difficult. A little coaxing from fingers is generally in order. Peel the rubber corner inside, so the cord can 'round the bend. Finish pulling the entire perimeter. DO NOT EXPECT TO FINAL SEAT THE WEATHERSTRIP BY JUST PULLING THE CORD. Once you go all the way around (all the cord is out), exit the vehicle and push the window home. It should seat further into the opening.
