There were a couple styles of outside spare mount racks.
Assuming you have one.., the weight is held by the tailgate & the force is downward. If your hinges & latches are in good working order...you should be OK there.
The real issue is the right side corner panel, where the swing arm mounts attach. These are usually pretty tight & when the truck flexes...this panel can twist, flex, crack, etc.
Mine is set-up with oversize holes where the two arms attach, the nuts are the locking type, (I leave them a "tad" loose) & teflon washers top & bottom, to allow them to slide a bit. This releases the torque when a "frame twister" is incountered./

YES..!
The aft. mkt. (or even home-made) bumpers that hold ALL the goodies are a better way to go. (spare, cooler, gas-can, etc.)
They put NO stress on the body or gate. However, they can be a bit "pricey" $-)

Do it how ever you can and be safe. For three years my spare sat on the bumper and was strapped too the tail gait with 5 tye downs and ratchet tyes too the cage and bumper!

I posted Question about spare tire rack,I used the stock rack to mount BFG 33 on 17x9 MT wheel.I made a 1x1/8 steel support w/rubber heal that rest on bumper to support the additional weight & 1x1/8 steel that hooks under the tire for security,both are mounted to the rack by the 3/8 bolt that secures the mounting plate that the wheel is mounted on.I got the look I wanted with 5 matching wheels w/center cap & lug nuts.This was designed for every day street driving,not off roading.Pictures are posted in gallery,let me know what you think.RNichols
