Is the truck cranking for a while or does it sound like the starter is grinding. I would replace the distributor cap and rotor first and then the starter solenoid.

If your starter is turning over normally, then it is neither the alternator nor the starter. The alternator doesn't have anything to do with starting. It's sole purpose in life is to charge up the battery and to supply the truck needs after it is started.

Hard starting would be in the ignition or fuel supply. What year truck do you have and what engine is in it?

Good luck,

:)>-

sea bronc is right on. with a description of what is happening while you try to start it, we may be able to help you out more in trouble shooting it. but it usualy is two things. fuel delivery or spark (ignition).

Not alternator.
